Vassvarden
Vassvarden is a 1,024-metre summit cairn on the Storholten ridge, rising straight out of the Sognefjord just above the little ferry village of Hella in Leikanger. It is one of the most rewarding 'toppturer' on the inner Sognefjord: a single long climb from sea level to a freestanding varde, with the view opening wider at every turn. The classic route runs through a living cultural landscape of old farms, meadows and birch woodland, past an abandoned mountain shieling and a disused schoolhouse, before crossing the treeline at Daurmålhaug and finishing on open, easy-going mountain terrain. Roughly 12.5 km round trip with about 1,020 metres of climbing and 4–5 hours of walking, it is graded a demanding (red) day out – and the panoramic reward is exactly what the Leikanger mountain tours are famous for.
