AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Saraysky Beach is the largest and most spectacular sandy beach on Olkhon Island, the sacred heart of Lake Baikal. Stretching nearly three kilometres along the sheltered waters of the Maloye More strait, it pairs golden dunes with turquoise shallows and dramatic mountain views across Siberia's great lake. Steps from the famous Shamanka Rock, this is where Baikal reveals a side few visitors expect—warm, bright, and endlessly photogenic.↗↗
A Miniature Desert at the Edge of a Great Lake
The beach runs from the foot of Cape Burkhan northward toward the village of Kharantsy. Its sand—fine, golden, and pleasantly gritty underfoot—was sculpted over millennia by wind and water eroding local bedrock. Trace minerals give it an occasional glint of carnelian or lazurite. Behind the shoreline, sand dunes creep slowly into the pine forest, half-burying ancient trees whose roots stand exposed like stilts, creating an otherworldly tableau that photographers love.↗↗
The name Saraysky has nothing to do with barns, despite the Russian word sarai suggesting so. Local historians trace it to the Buryat word saraa, meaning spread out or stretch—a fitting description of the broad, open sweep of sand and water.
