AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Isovaara is a compact hillside nature reserve that rises straight out of the northern Swedish village of Övertorneå. Locally known as Storberget, "the Big Mountain," it is a treasured everyday escape for residents and a rewarding short outing for travellers following the Torne river valley through Norrbotten. Protected since 1968 and part of the European Natura 2000 network, the 2.2-square-kilometre area pairs tidy hiking trails with genuinely old boreal forest.↗↗↗
The reward at the top is a 174-metre summit crowned by a rest cabin with a fireplace, from which the view opens wide across the Torne älvdal, one of Sweden's great wild-river landscapes. It is the kind of place that asks only a moderate effort and repays you with panorama, birdsong and a sense of standing above the valley.↗↗
A hill you can walk straight off the village
Isovaara lies immediately south of Övertorneå's centre, just west of road 99, with a car park at the trailhead, so you can leave your hotel or campsite and be among the trees within minutes. Several hiking paths thread up the mountain, and the most straightforward is a signed "health trail" (hälsoslinga) suited to anyone who walks comfortably without aids. Be warned that the underfoot surface is uneven, with real changes in height and some long stretches of slope, so the climb asks for a little stamina—but nothing technical.
