AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tucked into the Fužine neighbourhood on the eastern edge of Ljubljana, the Labyrinth of Art is a living sculpture that invites you to walk a spiral path enclosed by 287 Canadian hemlock trees. Created in 2010–2011 during Ljubljana's year as World Book Capital, it fuses landscape design with literature, philosophy, and the simple pleasure of strolling among evergreens.↗↗
The stone-paved trail underfoot is inscribed with quotations and proverbs from thinkers around the world, while memorial plaques beside the trees honour the community members who planted them. At the labyrinth's heart, a small wooden hut houses an open public library where anyone can sit, browse, and borrow a book—making the destination as much a reading room as a garden.↗↗
What It Is
The Labyrinth of Art is a spiral hedge-maze park designed by EXODOS Ljubljana, a non-profit performing-arts production centre known for its long-running international festival. The project grew out of the 16th EXODOS Festival's theme of walking as art, and the city's designation as World Book Capital in 2010. Construction began on the ground in December 2010 with a community planting day, and the labyrinth officially opened on 21 April 2011.
