AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Cascada de Huizúcar is a free, rustic waterfall on the Río Huiza, tucked into a stretch of deciduous forest just outside the colonial town of Huizúcar in La Libertad, El Salvador. A steep 10–15 minute trail leads down to a refreshing natural pool where visitors can swim, sunbathe, and enjoy a rare sense of solitude—often having the falls almost entirely to themselves.↗↗
Set only 15 km from San Salvador, this hidden gem pairs a genuine wilderness swim with easy access to a town known for its 1785 National Monument church, colorful street murals, and traditional food stalls.↗
The Falls
The cascade is fed by the clear waters of the Río Huiza, which runs through a corridor of deciduous forest between the districts of Huizúcar and Rosario de Mora. The main pool below the fall reaches roughly 2.5 meters deep—a spot locals call La Pilona, where legend says a golden fish dwells at the bottom. Shallower sections along the river make it possible for children to paddle safely.↗
