AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Suan Luang Rama VIII Park — usually simply called Rama VIII Park — is a riverside green space on the Thonburi bank of the Chao Phraya, tucked right at the foot of the striking Rama VIII Bridge in Bang Phlat, Bangkok. It pairs something Bangkok parks rarely offer together: wide open lawn and shade trees for strolling and exercising, plus a dramatic landmark view across the water. The cable-stayed bridge and the river are the park's signature, and at sunset the structure lights up, drawing photographers and locals alike.↗↗
Developed alongside the bridge as a royal project and named by King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) in honour of his brother, King Ananda Mahidol (Rama VIII), the park also carries a monumental tribute: a standing bronze statue of the king at three times life size, set at the height of the bridge balustrade. It is a relaxed, free, genuinely local place — a good late-afternoon stop that rewards you with river breeze, bridge views and a window into everyday Bangkok life.↗↗↗
