AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Royal Rose Garden (สวนกุหลาบหลวง) is a serene royal-project rose garden tucked into the hills of Hang Dong District, about 40 kilometers southwest of Chiang Mai. Part of the Huai Phak Phai Royal Project Development Center, it collects and displays over 200 rose varieties in a British-colonial-style setting, with a small restaurant serving organic produce from the surrounding project farms. The garden's name was bestowed in 1991 by Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, during a royal visit.↗↗↗
Visitors come for the peaceful garden strolls, the signature rose tea, and farm-to-table meals among the blooms. Peak season runs from October through February when the cool mountain air brings the roses to full display.↗↗
A Rose Garden with Royal Roots
What began as a humble Royal Project rose plot was transformed by a royal naming ceremony in 1991. During a visit to the rural communities of Hang Dong, Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, The Queen Mother, came to work at the garden and bestowed the name "Royal Rose Garden," elevating it from a project facility to a place of national significance. In 2016, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn also visited, reviewing the garden's role in agricultural processing and community development.
