AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Tarnim Magic Garden — also known as the Secret Buddha Garden — is a hilltop sculpture park hidden in the jungle on Koh Samui's highest interior ridge. Created by a single durian farmer starting in 1976, it pairs moss-covered statues of angels, animals, and Buddha figures with a cool freshwater stream and small cascades, giving it an ethereal, otherworldly atmosphere unlike anything else on the island.↗↗
Set atop Pom Mountain (now named Khun Nim Peak in honor of its creator), the garden is accessible via steep inland roads from Route 4169. Admission is modest, the visit is short but memorable, and the combination of flowing water, jungle greenery, and whimsical sculpture makes it one of Koh Samui's most distinctive cultural stops.↗↗
A Farmer's Final Dream
The story behind Tarnim Magic Garden is inseparable from the place itself. Khun Nim Thongsuk was a local agricultural pioneer — famous for advancing durian fruit cultivation on Koh Samui — who at the age of 77 began carving this hilltop jungle into something extraordinary. He travelled daily from his home in Na Mueang up to the peak of Pom Mountain to tend his fruit orchards, and in that solitude developed a deep spiritual attachment to the surroundings. In 1976, he started building what would become a public art garden, a shelter for traveling monks, and ultimately his own eternal resting place.
