AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Daitian Temple (Daitian Fu) is a neighborhood Taoist house of worship in Beipu Village, on the quiet agricultural plain of Shuili Township in Nantou County. Its name, 代天府 — "Palace that Patrols on behalf of Heaven" — signals the deity it honors: the Five Royal Lords (五府千歲), collectively known as Wang Ye, the "King Consorts" who, in folk belief, ride out from heaven to tour the land, dispel plague and misfortune, and bless the villages under their care.↗↗↗
Unlike the grand, floodlit tourist temples of Taiwan's cities, this is a place of lived, everyday faith — a local sanctuary where the rhythm of incense, festival offerings and family prayers is set by the community it serves rather than by visitor schedules.↗↗
The Five Royal Lords and the Faith of Daitian
Temples bearing the name "Daitian Fu" belong to the distinctive Wang Ye tradition of central and southern Taiwan. The Five Royal Lords are understood as deified officials who carry out 代天巡狩 — a "patrol on behalf of heaven" — inspecting the world, sweeping away disease and ill luck, and rewarding virtue. Followers usually address them by the five surnames of the lords, and prayers are offered for health, safety, prosperity and the resolution of difficult matters.
