AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Guanshan Chaotian Temple (台東縣關山朝天宮) is a small local Daoist temple tucked into Degao Village on the edge of Guanshan, an agricultural town in Taitung County's East Rift Valley. Open most of the day, it is a working neighbourhood place of worship rather than a packaged tourist stop—quiet, intimate and easy to combine with a drive through the valley.↗
The temple's principal deity is Tan Fu Qiansui (Lord Tan), one of the Twelve Royal Lords (王爺) of Chinese folk religion. Royal Lords are venerated as celestial officials who patrol a territory, drive away misfortune and plague and act as guardians of the local community—so Chaotian Temple functions as a spiritual protector of the surrounding village and farmland.↗↗
A temple of the Royal Lords
Unlike the valley's better-known Mazu shrines, this temple centres on the Wangye—the "Royal Lords" or "Thousand-Year Lords" of Daoist folk practice. At Chaotian Temple the chief enshrined spirit is Lord Tan (譚府千歲), counted among the Twelve Royal Lords. In folk belief these Lords are deputed by heaven to tour their assigned locality, sweep away pestilence and bad luck, and watch over households and harvests. The role shapes the atmosphere: this is a guardian temple where villagers come to pray for peace, health and protection.
