Hora Kruhlyy Yavirnyk

AT A GLANCE

Why go?

Hora Kruhlyy Yavirnyk (Ukrainian: Гора Круглий Явірник, "Round Yavirnyk") is a 1,221-metre peak on the Yavirnyk ridge in the Eastern Gorgany, the forested mountain wall that crowds the resort town of Yaremche in Ivano-Frankivsk Oblast. It is listed as an observation point for a good reason: the open mountain meadow (polonyna) on its flanks — Polonyna Kruhlo-yavirnyk — is one of the best lookouts in the immediate Yaremche area, throwing wide views across the Chornohora range and the close, rounded shoulder of Khomyak. Locals treat it as the highest easily reached vantage above the town.↗↗↗

The actual summit is wooded, so the reward of the climb is not a bare peak but the broad grassy pasture that opens just below it, where the forest gives way to sky. Routes start from Yaremche and from the nearby villages of Mykulychyn, Yamna and Tatariv, and a walk up to the polonyna and back is a classic one-day outing suitable for beginners and families with children. On clear days you can stand in soft mountain grass and read the whole Carpathian horizon from the Gorgany to Chornohora.↗↗

A high, open vantage above Yaremche

The Yavirnyk ridge runs north to south a few kilometres east of Yaremche, carrying a string of peaks from Bukovets and Zgar through the higher Yavirnyk-Horhan (1,467 m) down to Kruhlyy Yavirnyk at 1,221 m. Of the entire line, Kruhlyy Yavirnyk is the easiest to stand on with a real view: the steep spruce forests thin out into Polonyna Kruhlo-yavirnyk, a long pasture that tilts open to the south and west. Walkers who come up from the Zhenerets valley describe the upper part of the polonyna as the place where the mountain finally "opens," giving clear panoramas toward the Chornohora massif and, almost directly across the gorge, the big dome of Khomyak.↗↗

Even in winter the view holds. Photographers have posted snowy panoramas of Khomyak taken straight off the slope of Kruhlyy Yavirnyk, and the same frame in late summer is a sea of grass with the ridge of Yavirnyk rolling away below you. The top itself is a knot of spruce and fir, but the polonyna, the light on it, and the long walk of the Gorgany behind Khomyak are what draw people here.↗↗

In summer the neighbouring pastures of Yavirnyk and Kruhlo-yavirnyk are still grazed, and it is common to see Hutsul shepherds, their flocks and the distant call of a trembita horn. There is a small natural pool near the lower edge of the polonyna and a spring that feeds it, useful when other mountain sources have dried out in a hot August.↗↗

Ways up to the summit

Several well-used routes pass over or near Kruhlyy Yavirnyk, and most are day walks.↗

The classic beginner loop goes from Mykulychyn up the northern flank of Kruhlyy Yavirnyk to Polonyna Yavirnyk and back down the western slope to the Mykulychyn/Tatariv boundary — about 16 km and six hours, with gentler climbs than the ridge's steeper peaks. It is one of the recommended introductions to the Yavirnyk ridge for walkers with little experience.↗↗

From Yaremche itself there is a marked 14 km circular route (about 550 m of climbing) that crosses the Prut by the railway bridge at the Zhenerets stream, climbs a freshly cut switchback trail through mixed forest, then breaks out onto the open Kruhlo-yavirnyk polonyna before traversing on toward Polonyna Yavirnyk. The trail has new waymarkers and is well maintained through the summer.↗↗

From Yamna, a shorter, lightly marked radial heads up through Polonyna Vovcha and onto the same pasture before returning — about 14 km, but expect tall grass and occasional fallen trees on the quieter sections. The long traverse of the whole ridge (roughly 27 km, usually split over a night on Polonyna Yavirnyk) links Yamna, Kruhlyy Yavirnyk, Yavirnyk-Horhan, Zgar and finally back to Yaremche through the waterfall valley.↗

Pair the climb with Yaremche's waterfalls

One reason Yaremche-based walkers favour Kruhlyy Yavirnyk is the cluster of waterfalls that can be folded into the same outing. The tall, thundering Zheneretsky Huk (about 15 m) lies only 1.5 km below the polonyna, and the Naretchensky fall is a short detour from the Zhenerets valley — a quieter, less-photographed cascade that the route guides consistently recommend. In town, the famous Probiy waterfall on the Prut is the obvious warm-up or cool-down stop, and a small animal enclosure on Yaremche's eastern edge lets families see deer, boar and bear before or after the hike.↗↗

Accommodation is easy to arrange on either side of the ridge. The tourist shelter "Yavirnyk" near the polonyna and a simple wooden hut on Polonyna Yavirnyk (no electricity, no shower, but very atmospheric) are both used by overnight walkers, and the surrounding villages of Yaremche, Mykulychyn, Yamna and Tatariv have a wide range of guesthouses.↗↗

Practical notes for the climb

The mountain is open, free and not gated. There are no posted opening hours; access is by public trail from any of the surrounding villages, and the summit area itself is forested rather than built out as a formal viewpoint.↗

Best conditions are from mid-April through October, when the trails are visible and mostly dry. The ground underfoot is genuinely rocky and rooty, so proper trekking boots and poles are strongly recommended — not trainers. Spring is wetter and demands a membrane jacket, trousers and gaiters; winter climbing here is serious, with icy 30–40° slopes and strong wind, and is for experienced hikers with snowshoes, crampons and good navigation.↗

Carry your own water for the ridge. The Yavirnyk massif is dry and the springs are unreliable in high summer; the long stretch from Yavirnyk-Horhan toward Zgar has none at all. Polonyna Yavirnyk, Kruhlo-yavirnyk's small pool and the village-side sources near Tatariv and Yamna are the dependable fill-ups.↗↗

Stay on marked or well-trodden paths. The hills around Yavirnyk saw fighting in the Second World War, and unexploded grenades and shells still surface on the slope from time to time; local guides advise hikers not to wander off-trail, and to light fires and pitch tents only in designated spots.↗

Yaremche is the easiest base: overnight trains from Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa and Kharkiv stop there, regular regional trains and buses run from Ivano-Frankivsk, and Mykulychyn, Yamna and Tatariv all have rail or bus connections of their own for loop walks.↗↗

There is no wheelchair-accessible entrance or parking at the viewpoint, but the polonyna trail is rated good for children when walked in summer with reasonable boots.↗

What makes it special

01

Panoramic Carpathian viewpoint: open grassy polonyna with views of Khomyak and the Chornohora range, including the 2,061-metre Hoverla massif on clear days.↗↗

02

Classic Yaremche day walk — a 14 km marked loop from the Zhenerets valley, or an easy 16 km circuit from Mykulychyn — suited to first-time mountain hikers and families.↗↗↗

03

Easy to combine with the Zheneretsky Huk and Naretchensky waterfalls plus the Probiy falls on the Prut in Yaremche.↗

04

Live Hutsul mountain culture in summer: grazing polonyny, wooden hlyns (shelters) and shepherd camps on the ridge.↗↗

A little planning goes a long way

Best season: mid-April to October. Snow on the ridge can last into early May; first frosts reach the polonyna in October.
Wear sturdy ankle-high trekking boots and bring trekking poles — the trails are stony, rooty and steep on the upper slopes.↗
Carry more water than you think: springs dry up by late summer and there is a long dry stretch on the Yavirnyk ridge itself.↗
Stay on marked trails; the surrounding hills still contain unexploded ordnance from World War II.↗
Reach the trailheads by overnight train or bus to Yaremche, or by regional rail to Mykulychyn, Yamna and Tatariv for loop walks.↗↗
