AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Kingsport Greenbelt Trail Head is your gateway to one of Tennessee's most celebrated urban greenways—a approximately 10-mile paved pathway that winds through wetlands, meadows, woodlands, and historic sites along the Holston River and Reedy Creek. Conceived in the 1970s and realized through decades of community effort, this linear park connects neighborhoods, parks, downtown, and schools in a way that feels both practical and quietly magical.↗↗
Whether you're an avid cyclist, a casual walker, a birdwatcher, or a family looking for an engaging outdoor afternoon, the Greenbelt delivers a rare combination: free access, well-maintained trails, natural beauty, and genuine historical depth all within easy reach of a small Southern city.↗↗
A Trail With a Story
The Greenbelt began as a community dream in the 1970s when Riverfront Park and the Boatyard were developed, sparking interest in extending pathways along Reedy Creek and the Holston River. A master plan drawn up in 1989 outlined a trail connecting the East and West sides of Kingsport, and the citizen Greenbelt Advisory Committee—established in 1988—has guided its evolution ever since. Many original committee members remain actively involved, a testament to how deeply this trail belongs to the community.
