AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Ocean Beach is San Francisco's raw, open frontier on the Pacific: a 3.5-mile ribbon of pale sand running along the city's westernmost edge, right beside Golden Gate Park and within the Golden Gate National Recreation Area. There are no highrises, no boardwalk amusements and only a scattering of tourists—just the long swell, the gulls and a horizon that swallows the sun whole. It is a place for strolling, flying kites and watching surfers work the frigid break rather than for a dip in the water.↗↗
Tucked between the dunes and the sea, the beach has carried many lives: a windswept sand wilderness, a late-19th-century seaside resort, and a graveyard for ships. Today its appeal is quieter and elemental—wide skies toward the Golden Gate, fog that rolls in over the summer, and a sunset that feels earned after a brisk walk on the cold sand.↗↗
