AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Gearing's Point is a rocky headland in Hermanus that offers some of the most spectacular land-based whale-watching views in the world. Once a lookout for fishermen returning to Old Harbour, it is now a prime spot to observe Southern Right Whales, dolphins, and seals from a safe, elevated vantage point.↗↗↗↗
Visitors can stroll along the scenic Cliff Path, relax on benches with panoramic ocean views, or use the telescope to get a closer look at the marine life. It's a must-visit for anyone wanting to experience the raw beauty of the South African coast.↗↗
Whale Watching Capital
From June to December, Gearing's Point comes alive with activity as Southern Right Whales migrate to Walker Bay to mate and calve. The elevated position provides a clear view of the bay, allowing visitors to spot whales breaching and tail-slapping just offshore.↗
