AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Hermanus New Harbour is the town's working fishing port on the western edge of Walker Bay, where commercial boats come and go, seals bask around the slipways and the whale-watching fleet casts off for the bay. It is a far less polished, far more authentic waterfront than the museum-like Old Harbour in the centre, and it is where most visitors actually get on the water to see Southern Right Whales.↗↗↗
Tucked off Westcliff Road beside the Zwelihle side of town, the harbour pairs a real fishing-harbour atmosphere with harbourfront restaurants, a lively Saturday craft-and-fish market and departure points for boat and catamaran cruises. Come in the morning for working-boat activity, at golden hour for a sunset sail, or simply to walk the wharf and scan the bay.↗↗↗
A working harbour, not a marina
Where the historic Old Harbour has become a heritage site and museum, the New Harbour still earns its living. It has been the home of Hermanus' fishing fleet since the late 1920s, when the older quayside could no longer cope with the number of boats. Today commercial vessels launch and return with their catch through the day, and watching that daily rhythm—boats nosing out past the breakwater, crews unloading, gulls and Cape fur seals jostling at the waterline—is the main reason to stroll the wharf.
