AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Hole in the Wall is a gap carved through a wall of coastal rock at Thompson's Bay, tucked along the Dolphin Coast between Ballito and Shaka's Rock. The name comes from that natural archway: pass through it at the right tide and you step onto a handful of small, usually empty beaches that feel a world away from the busy main bay. It is a place for exploring rather than lounging, and it rewards good timing more than long beach hours.↗↗↗
Just to the south of Thompson's Bay's large tidal pool, the Hole in the Wall leads down to some of the most secluded stretches of sand on this coast. Locals and returning visitors call it a hidden gem — pretty, photogenic and quieter than central Ballito, with the added draw of a sheltered, lifeguarded pool for a calmer swim on the same visit.↗↗↗
A natural arch in the rock
Thompson's Bay is the Dolphin Coast stop people remember from photos: layered rock headlands on either side, channels, and tidal pools, framed by the broad bay. The Hole in the Wall is the feature that gives this corner its name — a visible hole through a wall of rock on the southern side, just past the main tidal pool. The opening frames the ocean in a dramatic way, which is why photographers, beach walkers and curious locals make a point of finding it.
