The lodge's own restaurant serves modern New Zealand cuisine with fresh local produce and superb wines, and its bar offers pre-dinner drinks and canapés. For a change of scene, Rotorua city, about a 20-minute drive away, has many dining options. You can also arrange a picnic from the lodge to enjoy by the lake. The restaurant is open all day, but booking is recommended.
Solitaire Lodge sits on a private peninsula on the shores of Lake Tarawera, with Mount Tarawera rising directly across the water. The setting is quiet and secluded, surrounded by unspoiled lake views and native bush. Rotorua city, with its geothermal parks and cultural attractions, is about a 20-minute drive away. The lodge itself offers a restaurant and bar, and the area is known for outdoor activities like kayaking, boat charters, and trout fishing. It's a peaceful, nature-focused base, with the city's sights a short drive from your door.
From Rotorua Airport, turn right onto Te Ngae Rd and follow it toward the city. About 4 km past the airport, turn left at the roundabout onto Tarawera Road, then continue straight, following Solitaire Lodge signs. After about 19 km, turn right onto Ronald Road; the lodge is 400 metres along. The drive takes roughly 25 minutes. If arriving by train, Rotorua has no main station, so take a taxi or pre-booked transfer from the airport or city centre.
Evenings at Solitaire Lodge are best spent right on the shores of Lake Tarawera, with Mount Tarawera as your backdrop. The lodge's own bar and restaurant serve pre-dinner drinks, canapés, and a five-course evening meal, so you can settle in for a memorable night without going anywhere. For a change of scene, the city sights like the Polynesian Spa and Government Gardens are about a 12.5 km drive away, where you could enjoy a soak or a stroll. You could also book a tour like the Te Puia: Te Pō Indigenous Evening Experience with Dinner, which offers a cultural evening in Rotorua. A taxi or ride-hailing service can get you there and back, letting you enjoy the evening at your own pace.
Solitaire Lodge sits on Lake Tarawera, about 18 km from Rotorua city, so the main sights are a drive away. The Redwoods Treewalk is 10.8 km, Whakarewarewa is 12.2 km, and Polynesian Spa is 12.5 km, all reachable by car or taxi. For a lakeside retreat with easy access to Rotorua's geothermal and cultural attractions, it works well. You can also enjoy kayaking or boat trips right from the lodge, making it a great base for both exploring and relaxing.
