Four Monkeys

The best time to visit Ålesund is from May to August, when temperatures are mildest and daylight is longest. June and July are the most pleasant months, with average highs around 15-17°C and the famous midnight sun. September is still comfortable, but October through March brings the most rain and short, dark days. For the driest stretch, April and May tend to have less precipitation than the autumn months.

Stay in the town center for easy access to the harbor, restaurants, and the Aksla Viewpoint. The area around the waterfront suits most visitors, with hotels like Quality Hotel Waterfront and Scandic Alesund. For a quieter, more residential feel, the Norvøya island is close to the center and has Quality Hotel Ålesund and Four Monkeys. The center is compact, so anywhere within it keeps you near the main sights and ferry terminal.

Start at Aksla Viewpoint for the classic panorama over the islands and fjords. Then explore Jugendstilbyen Ålesund, the town center rebuilt in Art Nouveau style after the 1904 fire. Atlantic Sea-Park is a large open-air aquarium with local marine life and touch pools. Sunnmøre Museum shows regional history in old buildings, and Alnes fyr is a scenic lighthouse on a nearby island, reachable by ferry and bus.

Full-day tours from Ålesund head to the Geirangerfjord, a UNESCO-listed fjord with steep cliffs and waterfalls, and to the Atlantic Road, a scenic coastal drive over bridges and islets. The Alnes lighthouse on Godøy island is also a popular tour stop, offering coastal views and a fishing village setting. These trips typically return to Ålesund the same day.

Plan 2 to 3 days in Ålesund. In two days, you can see Aksla Viewpoint, the Jugendstilbyen architecture, Atlantic Sea-Park, and Sunnmøre Museum. Add a third day for a trip to Alnes fyr or Byrampen Viewpoint. If you take a full-day tour, add an extra day.
