Getsemani Cartagena Hotel

January to March is the best time to visit Cartagena: the sun is strong around 32°C, humidity is lower, and rain is rare with just 3 to 7 wet days a month. From April through November, expect frequent showers, peaking in October and November with about 25 to 27 rain days; temperatures stay warm but humid. Visit in the early dry season for the most reliable beach and sightseeing days.

Stay in the walled Centro Histórico for colonial charm and easy access to the main sights; the Sofitel Legend Santa Clara is there. Getsemaní suits travelers who want a lively, artsy vibe, with hotels like Casa Pizarro and GHL Arsenal. Bocagrande, including El Laguito, is a beachfront strip with high-rise hotels like Hilton Cartagena and Estelar. Barú is a quieter island option, though it is a separate trip from the city.

See the San Felipe de Barajas Fort, the largest Spanish fort in South America, with sweeping views. The Torre del Reloj clock tower marks the old city entrance. Walk the Walls of Cartagena for the best vantage of the bay and sunset. Plaza de la Trinidad in Getsemaní is a lively local square. The Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa sits atop the highest hill, offering panoramic sights and a quiet cloister.

daytrip: The Rosario Islands offer white-sand beaches and coral reefs. The mud volcano El Totumo is a one-of-a-kind experience. Palenque de San Basilio, a free town founded by escaped slaves, preserves African heritage. Each is a short trip from the city.

Plan 3 days for the main sights. Spend day one in the walled Centro Histórico, the Clock Tower, and San Felipe de Barajas Fort. Day two covers the Walls, Getsemaní's Plaza de la Trinidad, and the Convent of Santa Cruz de la Popa. Use day three for the Museum of Cartagena and a relaxed walk through the old city. If you take the full-day tour to Murcia, add a fourth day.
