The best time to visit Chengdu is from March to May or September to November, when temperatures are mild and rain is less frequent than in summer. June through August is the hottest and most humid stretch, with July and August seeing the most rain days. Winter months (December to February) are cool and drier, but can be overcast. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for exploring the city.
Stay near the city center for easy access to sights: the Jinli area suits first-timers, with Wuhou Shrine and the lively Jinli street nearby. The Kuanzhai Alley district is great for those wanting traditional architecture and teahouses, with the Theme Hotel (Chengdu Kuanzhai Alley) right there. For a quieter, more local feel, the area around Wenshu Yuan Monastery offers a peaceful stay, close to the monastery and People's Park. The Wuhou district, around the Second Ring Road, is convenient for metro access and has the Holiday Inn Express Chengdu Wuhou.
Start with the Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding to see pandas up close in a natural setting. Kuan Alley and Zhai Alley offer a walk through restored Qing-era streets with teahouses and snacks. People's Park is where locals gather for tea and the famous matchmaking corner. Chengdu Wu Hou Shrine honors the Three Kingdoms hero Zhuge Liang, and Wenshu Yuan Monastery is a peaceful Buddhist complex with fine gardens. For a riverside landmark, Anshun Bridge is a striking sight, especially lit at night.
Full-day tours from Chengdu go to the Leshan Giant Buddha, a massive riverside statue, and to Dujiangyan, an ancient irrigation system. Mount Mengding is a tea-growing area where you can join a tea-making experience. Panda volunteer programs are also available at Dujiangyan or Wolong Panda Base.
Plan 3 days in Chengdu: one for the Panda Base, one for Kuan and Zhai Alley, People's Park, and Wenshu Yuan Monastery, and one for Wu Hou Shrine and Jinli. If you want to add a day trip to Leshan or Dujiangyan, add an extra day. Two days can cover the pandas and the old town sights, but three feels more relaxed.
