The best time to visit Chongqing is from March to May and September to November, when temperatures are mild and comfortable. April and May are pleasant but bring frequent rain, with about 17-18 rainy days per month. July and August are the hottest, with highs of 33-35°C, though August is drier. October is also mild but rainy. Winter months are cool and relatively dry, making them a quieter option.
Stay in Jiefangbei for the central shopping and dining scene, close to Hongyadong and the Yangtze River. Nan'an offers a quieter riverside feel with easy metro access, and Guanyinqiao is a lively commercial hub popular with locals. For a more relaxed stay, Ciqikou's old town area suits those wanting historic charm, though it is farther from the center. The Hilton Chongqing and GreenTree Eastern Hotel are in Jiefangbei and Nan'an respectively.
Chongqing Hongyadong (Northwest Gate) is the iconic stilted-house complex glowing over the river, best at night. Hongyadong Folk Custom Scene Area offers the same neighborhood's shops and food. Ciqikou is an old porcelain town with narrow lanes and teahouses. Chongqing Zoo is worth it for the giant pandas and other wildlife.
The full-day tours from Chongqing go to Wulong, known for its karst landscapes and natural bridges, and to Dazu, famous for its rock carvings. The city tours cover Chongqing itself, so for a classic day trip, consider visiting the ancient town of Ciqikou or the Three Gorges Museum area. These are well-known options from general knowledge.
Plan 3 days: one for Hongyadong and the Folk Custom Scene Area, one for Ciqikou and the Zoo, and a third for a day trip to Wulong or Dazu Rock Carvings. If you skip the day trip, 2 days cover the main sights comfortably.
