I stayed at Despertar Saudade and it was a nightmare. From 22:00 until 5 a.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays nights there were loud music from neighboring club and shouting inside the guesthouse, making it impossible to sleep. We had to check out early because another sleepless night was unbearable. Management only apologized and admitted the problem comes from the bar and other guests, which means they know about it but can’t control it. Totally unacceptable for a place that claims to offer comfort. If you value your rest — avoid this place. One can't enjoy really nice location and being tortured by sleepless nights. Not worth it

Unfortunately we did not have the best experience staying here. There is a club next door that was playing loud music all night until the early hours of the morning which kept us awake. The club goers were also loitering outside the entrance and blocking it when we left around 10am. While the rooms appeared nice we had issues with a broken door and limited hot water in the shower. The breakfast options were great though. Although we know the noise issues are probably out of the owners control, we thought it's best for people to know and I imagine without the noise it may have been a more restful place to stay.

I adore this place. Very cozy historical building at a great location, about 15 minutes walk towards Universidade de Coimbra. Close to bars, shops and literally next to an ATM. The room was very clean and comfortable equipped with everything I needed. The kitchen is full with snacks, fruits, tea and coffee to share and they'd provide breakfast from 6 AM onwards. The self check-in is efficient though I was also greeted in the reception. Bonus: if you're lucky, there will be two cats gracing you with their presence in the garden 😊

Very nice cozy hotel in the center of Coimbra, all sights are available walking distance. Lots of cafeterias and bars are around, at the hotel toasts, jams and biscuits are available in the shared kitchen together with teas and coffees, you can enjoy your drink in the patio observing the cats, also you can fix yourself a breakfast, all kitchenware is new and available. Wifi was free and fast :) We booked a room for one night during the week and were pleasantly surprised to find out it was upgraded as there were not much visitors same time. Room very very nice, stylish and clean, airco worked nicely for heating. Thank you so much, would love to stay here again.

This is a very tastefully renovated old house on a main square in Coimbra. It is modern and clean throughout. I particularly liked the courtyard garden and the communal kitchen/lounge. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. The only drawback is it can be quite noisy at night and if you've got heavy suitcases and are on the top floor, there is no lift and you have to go up a lot of stairs. This guest house is recommended for a stay in a traditional house with modern facilities in a central location at an excellent price.

Receptionist was very friendly and helpful, she even baked a cake for guests to enjoy in the lounge, which has a terrace. Single rooms and bathrooms are tiny but ok for one night. The shower leaked and basin tap has too much pressure so you can easily wet your clothes when washing your hands. The bed was comfortable but the noise on the street made sleep challenging, students were having what sounded like a street party. I would stay again but only if we could have room(s) not facing Praça da República.

I hated almost everything about this hotel. First off, no one is there; everything is handled remotely by WhatsApp. So if you get there early, you can’t leave your luggage. They only text you a door code at 4 PM. My room door wasn’t open like they promised, so I had to text them, and they told me where the master key was, just sitting in an unlocked drawer at the front desk that no one ever is at. So basically that meant my room was entirely unsecured. They don’t do breakfast, they just leave some snacks in your room, and it wasn’t enough for my whole visit. They don’t refill snacks or change out towels. There was only enough hot water for five minutes of shower, and then it got freezing. Oh, and the dance music from the bar next door is loud all night long. Definitely do not stay here!

Frequently asked questions about Coimbra

When is the best time to visit Coimbra?

The best time to visit Coimbra is in spring (April to June) or early autumn (September to October), when temperatures are mild and rainfall is lower. July and August are the hottest and driest months, ideal for outdoor sightseeing but can feel intense. The rainiest stretch is typically from November to February, with cooler, wetter weather. The Queima das Fitas festival in May is a famous, well-documented celebration worth planning around.

Which area should I stay in in Coimbra?

Stay in the historic center, around the Old Cathedral and the University, for easy access to the main sights and a lively atmosphere. The riverside area near the Santa Clara bridge suits those who want scenic walks and a quieter feel. The Baixa, the lower town, is convenient for shopping and dining, with several hotels like CBR Boutique Hotel and Hotel Mondego nearby. For a more residential stay, the area around the Botanical Garden offers a peaceful setting within walking distance of the center.

What are the must-see attractions in Coimbra?

Start with Portugal dos Pequenitos, a park of miniature monuments that gives a quick overview of Portuguese heritage. The Monastery of the Holy Cross holds the tombs of the first two kings of Portugal. The Old Cathedral is a Romanesque gem, while the Botanical Garden offers a peaceful green escape. For a romantic touch, the gardens of Quinta das Lágrimas are tied to the story of Inês de Castro. The Choupal National Forest is a riverside woodland ideal for a stroll.

What day trips can I take from Coimbra?

The full-day tour from Coimbra goes to Fátima, Batalha, and Nazaré. Fátima is a major pilgrimage site, Batalha is home to a grand Gothic monastery, and Nazaré is a coastal town known for its beach and big waves. These three stops make a varied day trip from the city.

How many days do I need in Coimbra?

Plan 2 days for Coimbra. On day one, see the Old Cathedral, Monastery of the Holy Cross, and the New Cathedral, all in the historic center. On day two, visit Portugal dos Pequenitos, the Botanical Garden, and the Quinta das Lágrimas gardens. If you want to take the full-day tour to Fatima, Batalha and Nazaré, add a third day.
