The hotel is located on the top of the hill, reason why it offers a stunning view on the city. It’s also not far from the city center, and you can easily walk to the main points of Coimbra. The building is very beautiful, and we found it very nice that they kept the original architecture and interiors of the place it used to be. The man at the check-in was extremely kind and gave us a full overview of the city, including many suggestions about where to go and what to eat. The breakfast was good, we would have personally appreciated a larger variety of options considering the price, but overall we enjoyed our staying and we’d definitely recommend it!

Honestly, this was a very poor experience. The check-in hours, originally indicated as between 15:00 and 22:30, were changed to 14:00–20:00 without any email notification. We arrived as a family with a young child only to find a closed door.|The building itself is in mediocre condition, and the photos do not reflect reality. There is no secure parking available. The kitchen was not functional, and the fridge in the studio—needed for medication—was not working. There were no utensils provided. The cleanliness was also very poor. Overall, the welcome and room amenities were unacceptable. I strongly do not recommend this place. Not safe for travellers.

Very nice and stylish hotel, the breakfast could benefit from more vegetables, but all in all good value for money and nice location.I would stay here again, when I come back to Coimbra.

This was our favorite hotel in Portugal. The receptionist was extremely helpful. He gave us a map of Coimbra and pointed out all the places to visit and restaurants. We followed his advice and had a great time exploring. Both nights we ate at Troika which he recommended and it was excellent and just around the corner from the hotel. We enjoyed the hotel breakfast.

I travelled alone to Coimbra. I truly appreciated the service and piece of advice to get around the city. The room was spacious and clean, window curtains were missing a bit especially in the bathroom. I enjoyed the full English breakfast. I will def come back to the Luggage Hotel in Coimbra.

This was a beautiful old house at one point and it’s been turned into a very nice boutique Hotel complete with a morning breakfast if you want to add it on. My room was very comfortable and clean and it had everything I really needed. There could’ve been a little bit more convenient Phone charging outlets, but I made do. This hotel is also very conveniently located to the hub of the university with all the restaurants, shops, and of course, the university itself to explore.. I particularly liked the little breakfast room the next morning, as it was very sunny and pleasant with a view of Coimbra , including the prison that everyone thinks is a church. The breakfast itself was delicious as well as the coffee which was most welcomed early in the morning. The staff was very pleasant and helpful, especially Tony. Thanks for a nice stay.

Arrived lunchtime and were able to drop off suitcases at reception area until 3pm check-in time. |Outside of building needs maintenance but our suite was big and airy. Spotlessly clean inside and breakfast was sufficient. Very near the centre - easy walk down to centre but a killer to walk back up the hill! |On street parking (metered). There is free parking opposite street if you’re lucky enough to get a space.

Where can I eat near The Luggage?

The Luggage has its own bar and cafe, so you can grab a drink or a snack without going far. For meals out, the area around the hotel offers a good range of options. You can try Troika, which a recent guest praised as excellent and just around the corner. Other nearby choices include AAC Pub for craft beers, Japones for sushi, Cafe Mocambique for Portuguese dishes, Borges for seafood, and Sal e Brasa Restaurante Coimbra for grilled meats. Restaurante O Trovador and La Botiga Bistro & Mercearia are also close by for traditional and Mediterranean-inspired food.

What is the area around The Luggage like?

The Luggage sits in the historic Se Nova quarter, a UNESCO-listed area on a hill above the old town. You are a short walk from the university and its sights, with the Science Museum 4 minutes away and the New Cathedral 6 minutes away. The streets around the hotel are lively, with cafes and restaurants nearby, including Troika just around the corner. The hotel's own bar and cafe offer a relaxed spot with city views. The area is walkable, though the hill means a steady climb back up from the lower town.

How do I get to The Luggage from the airport or main train station?

From Coimbra B train station, take a taxi or ride-hailing service to the hotel, about a 5 minute ride. The hotel is on a hill, so walking with luggage is not ideal. If arriving by bus, the central bus station is a bit closer, but a taxi is still the easiest option. From Lisbon or Porto airports, take a train to Coimbra B, then a taxi to the hotel. The nearest station, Coimbra Train Station, is about 1.1 km away, so a short taxi ride is recommended.

What's there to do near The Luggage in the evening?

In the evening, you can enjoy the hotel's own bar with a balcony, serving drinks and snacks, or relax in the lounge. For a cultural night out, Fado ao Centro, a fado house in the historic centre, offers performances of Coimbra's academic fado traditions. The surrounding area is lively, with the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra just a 4-minute walk away, and the New Cathedral 6 minutes away, both worth a stroll to see illuminated. The Old Cathedral, 8 minutes on foot, and the Monastery of the Holy Cross, 10 minutes away, are also nearby for an evening wander. You can easily walk to these sights and then return to the bar for a nightcap.

Is The Luggage a good base for exploring Coimbra?

Yes, The Luggage is a great base for exploring Coimbra. You can walk to the Science Museum of the University of Coimbra in 4 minutes, the Aqueduto de São Sebastião in 5, the New Cathedral in 6, and the Jardim Botânico in 7. The Old Cathedral is 8 minutes away, and the Monastery of the Holy Cross and Barbican Gate are both 10 minutes on foot. Parque da Cidade Manuel Braga is a 12-minute walk. For sights further out, like Conimbriga or the Bussaco forest, you can join a tour from the city. The hotel's central location makes it easy to set out each day.
