Frequently asked questions about Himeji

When is the best time to visit Himeji?

October and April are the most pleasant months: mild daytime highs around 19-23°C and fewer rain days than summer. November is also nice with only five rain days. The hottest, rainiest stretch runs from June to August, peaking with August's 18 rain days and 32°C highs. Visit in autumn or spring for comfortable sightseeing weather.

Which area should I stay in in Himeji?

Stay near Himeji Station for the easiest access to trains, shops, and restaurants; it suits first-time visitors. The area around the castle, like Ōtemae, is quieter and within walking distance of the main sights. Hotels like Hotel Fosse Himeji and Daiwa Roynet Hotel Himeji are by the station, while Setre Highlandvilla sits on Mount Hirome, good for a scenic stay.

What are the must-see attractions in Himeji?

Start with Himeji Castle, Japan's finest surviving feudal fortress and a UNESCO site. Next to it, Koko-en Garden offers nine restored Edo-period garden scenes. Engyōji, a mountaintop temple complex with forested paths, is a short trip away. Himeji Central Park is a drive-through safari park, and the city aquarium is compact but family-friendly. For a quick break, Ōtemae Park sits right below the castle keep.

What day trips can I take from Himeji?

The full-day tours from Himeji include a Kumano Kodo pilgrimage by car, a chance to walk parts of the ancient sacred trail and visit its historic shrines. The other tours stay in Himeji, covering Himeji Castle, Engyoji, and the aquarium. So Kumano Kodo is the main day trip beyond the city.

How many days do I need in Himeji?

Two days is a good fit for Himeji. On the first day, see Himeji Castle and the adjacent Koko-en Garden, then walk through Ōtemae Park. The second day can cover Engyōji and the Himeji City Aquarium, or the Hyogo Prefectural Museum of History. If you want to add a full-day tour like the Kumano Kodo, plan for a third day.

Excellent food and drink. The service has room for improvement; for example, the staff should take the lid off the hotpot instead of letting the customer do it. Overall, it is still a very good hotel 💚

Response from the property

(Translated by Google) Dear nel chan, Thank you very much for staying with us and for sharing your valuable feedback. We were delighted to read your kind words about the food and drinks being "wonderful." However, we sincerely apologize for any shortcomings in our service that did not meet your expectations. In particular, we are very sorry that our staff were unable to properly guide and address the issue with the pot lid. We will share your feedback with our staff and strive to improve our service to provide even more attentive and considerate service. Even so, your comment that it was a "very good hotel" is a great encouragement to us. We will continue to work even harder to ensure your satisfaction in terms of service in the future. We have been visiting many onsen ryokans or hotels in Japan. This hotel is very good and my rooms is very large with indoor onsen and super deluxe design. However, we were disappointed during checking in. Their time slots for dinner and breakfast were somewhat ridiculous. Either too early or too late. No one told us where we could get our welcome drinks, or had staffs to guide us to pue room. Our breakfast time was even arranged by error on 8:30 instead of 7:00 as we had decided. Everything was so good except the hotel service should be improved.

Love their infinity onsen pool overlooking Seto Sea. Dinner is great with seasonal local ingredients.

We forgot to inform the hotel that there were vegetarian members in our group at the time of booking, but the kitchen was able to prepare a wonderful vegetarian dinner for us at the last minute! We were truly impressed by the sincerity and quality of the service. The rooms and the outdoor hot springs offer amazing views to the ocean which was most relaxing and refreshing for us. Thank you to the staff for looking after us so well!

This onsen was a great experience and the perfect getaway from busy Kyoto and Osaka during the New Year holiday. The salt sauna was a pleasant surprise as this area is know for prized salt. The omakase with the steamed oysters was also unique to Aioi. We slept very comfortably in futons. The big windows displayed an incredible sunrise when we pulled back the curtains in the morning.

Passable onsen and hotel. The views over the sea are rather beautiful though. So if dining in the restaurant on the third floor, or relaxing in the onsen (separated mens and womens areas), you can allow your mind to really slip away with the flow of the water. The food is passable. Lunch was OK, from the look of it, better flavours were expected. Though it was rather bland for certain dishes, then far too strong for others. The service was also relatively abrupt. Everything is brought on a tray, then you are just left. We would have liked more water, though there was no-one to ask. Note that the restaurant was quiet, we had an early start, so opted for lunch at 11am, there were 10 people including us in the restaurant, and the three servers just disappeared. The onsen baths are pleasant. Though they lack a cold plunge bath, which would have been great. On the plus side there is an outdoor saltwater bath, relaxing in it while quietly overlooking the sea was incredibly calming. Overall it is OK here, if you can get a special deal then it could be worthwhile.
