CHISUN BUDGET Kanazawa Ekimae

The best time to visit is April and May, when temperatures are mild and rain is less frequent. October is also pleasant, with comfortable highs around 21°C. Winter months, especially December and January, are the rainiest, with over 25 rain days each. Summer, particularly July and August, is hot and humid, with highs near 30°C. Spring's cherry blossom season in early April is a well-known highlight.

Stay near Kanazawa Station for easy train access and convenience, with hotels like Hyatt House Kanazawa and Hotel Nikko Kanazawa. For a traditional atmosphere, choose the Higashi Chaya area, where Kinjohro is located, close to teahouses and canals. The Kanazawa Castle area suits those wanting to be near the park and gardens, with Uan Kanazawa and Kanazawa Hakuchoro Hotel Sanraku as options. The Nagamachi Samurai District offers a quieter, historic setting.

Kenroku-en is one of Japan's most celebrated landscape gardens, with ponds, streams and seasonal flowers. Higashi Chaya District preserves teahouses and geisha culture along atmospheric streets. Kanazawa Castle Park and the adjacent castle offer expansive grounds and reconstructed gates. Nagamachi Samurai District features restored samurai residences and earthen walls. Myouryuji, the Ninja Temple, hides clever traps and secret passages.

From Kanazawa, full-day tours head to Shirakawa-go and Takayama, both in the Japan Alps. Shirakawa-go is known for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Takayama offers a well-preserved old town with morning markets and sake breweries. Tours also combine Shirakawa-go with Gokayama, another village of similar historic farmhouses. These trips give you a look at rural mountain life and architecture.

Plan 2 to 3 days for Kanazawa. In two days, you can see Kenroku-en, Kanazawa Castle Park, the Higashi Chaya and Nagamachi Samurai districts, and the D.T. Suzuki Museum. Add a third day for a trip to Shirakawa-go or Takayama, which needs a full day. If you want to include the Ninja Temple and Kazuemachi Chaya, a third day in the city helps.
