From The Beatles and Lonely Planet’s Tony Wheeler in the 1970s, legendary mountaineers, authors and explorers in the ‘80s & ‘90s to present-day parliamentarians, presidents and world-famous artists, the Kathmandu Guest House (KGH) has been housing travelers since 1968. From the iconic Heritage Building built in 1902 to the modern-designed rooms in the new annexes, the KGH has always been at the top of restoration and upgrading every year. Being in the heart of Thamel, the KGH is known as a landmark, as it was the KGH that started the tourist hub of Thamel.

Within the compounds of KGH, luscious 15,000 sq. ft. of manicured garden with mango, pomelo, multi colored bougainvillea trees & well curated art, you can enjoy solitude, laughter with friends, or the sun with a cold drink or a hot cup of Himalayan coffee.

With the recent opening of the Museum of Nepali Art (MoNA) and the Kathmandu Art House within its premises, the Kathmandu Guest House (KGH) stands as one of the very few hotels in the world to house a world-class museum. MoNA is dedicated to celebrating the works of living Nepali artists, spanning the spectrum from traditional to contemporary visual arts. Meanwhile, the Kathmandu Art House offers a vibrant open studio experience where guests can meet artists in action, engage with their creative process, and purchase original artworks on the spot.

KGH is an immersive experience, tastefully serving authentic Nepali, Chinese, Indian and Continental cuisine with most probably the best Himalayan coffee. One can also enjoy a Nepali tea ceremony experience with flagship store of Nepal Tea Collective. The rooftop lounge on the 7th floor is a perfect sundowner to view the Swayambhunath Stupa in the Himalayan sunset.

With 115 different priced rooms, the size and views may be a bit different, but our hospitality is the same. Being one of the earliest running hotels of Nepal, we take pride in our values and serve all our guests with warmth.

Great location in the heart of Kathmandu with a small garden away from the street hustle and bustle. Rooms large and well-appointed.|However, a number of our group got very little sleep due to the close proximity of a local nightclub which played very loud music until early the following morning (until 6am!!). The evening buffet meal we had there was pretty tasteless, although had an excellent brownie in the hotel coffee shop and there are other places to eat.|Would not stay again because of the nightclub issue.

I have stayed at your property several times before and occasionally come for coffee because I genuinely like the garden and the atmosphere. However, after repeatedly experiencing this kind of treatment, I can no longer stay silent. As a Nepali trekking guide, I often visit with my foreign clients. During my last stay with my family, your security guard stopped me and questioned me extensively, to the point that I had to call my partner to prove that I was staying at your hotel. I let it go at the time, assuming the guard was simply doing his job. What I found difficult to ignore was seeing foreign guests walking through the same gates without being questioned while I was treated with suspicion. Today, the same thing happened again. Our bags were in storage, my partner entered the property, and I was walking right behind her. The guard stopped me and told me I was not allowed to enter and had to wait outside the gate. Is this really the level of hospitality and service your establishment stands for? I cannot help but question whether I am being treated this way simply because I am Nepali. Why am I repeatedly singled out when I am a returning guest and have stayed at your property with my family? Do I need to wear an expensive gold chain around my neck to prove that I am a legitimate guest who has every right to enter your hotel? Security is important, and I respect that. But security procedures should be applied fairly and consistently to everyone, regardless of nationality, appearance, or background. I am genuinely disappointed that a place I once enjoyed visiting for its garden and atmosphere has left me feeling unwelcome and discriminated against. I hope management takes this feedback seriously and looks into how its security staff treat Nepali guests.

As a solo traveler, if budget is not a constraint, this is the best place to stay, the food, environment and the cleaniness is so lovely. You have two entrace where is goes to thamel street and shopping is heaven. Room, bathroom, food in hotel and staff services were excellent, will recommend and decided to make my next visit here again.

I had a good stay at this hotel. The location is convenient and makes it easy to get around. The rooms were satisfactory and reasonably comfortable. The food was average, with room for improvement in terms of variety and taste. The staff was professional, polite, and helpful throughout my stay. Overall, it was a pleasant experience and a good option for travelers looking for a comfortable stay.

Tiny bit on the old-fashioned side, for good and for bad. The rooms and breakfast are totally ok but nothing to write home about. Make sure to check which side the room faces, the view to the garden (with balcony) is so nice! Also great if you like to breathe air (as bad as it is in Kathmandu) and open your window rather than use AC all the time. Super friendly staff. Gym is disappointing - not clear why one even has to pay an extra fee. But the garden is so very nice and quiet, that’s a big plus!

Rooms are very hit and miss - some renovated some needed renovation and the beds were extremely uncomfortable. Air conditioning was also a bit questionable in some rooms. We stayed 3 times and had to change rooms every time - which they accommodated without issue. They have limited queen bed ( for 2 ). In the end - we just opted for separate beds rather than sleeping on an uncomfortable bed.

Located at the heart of Thamel. Easy to get anything from food to accessories to transport. Excellent ambience. Tourist friendly location. The hotel has a fantastic Museum inside. It is worth visiting. The washbasin inside room opposite of the bathroom. I had to come out of the bathroom for hand washing. The window is not noise-proof and opens to the hallway. It is not possible to keep the curtains open. Staffs are super friendly and polite.

You can eat well without leaving the hotel: the KGH Dream Garden Restaurant serves Nepali, Indian, and Chinese dishes, and there is also Pizzeria Maya, Himalayan Java Coffee, and a snack bar. For a short walk, try New Orleans (1 minute), Yin Yang (2 minutes), The Third Eye (2 minutes), B.K's Fries (2 minutes), or Roadhouse Cafe (2 minutes). A bit further, Pho-99 (5 minutes) and Fire and Ice (10 minutes) are good options. The Thamel area around the hotel is full of cafes and street food stalls, so you will have plenty of choices.
