The best time to visit Kotor is from May to June or September, when temperatures are warm (22-28°C) and rain is less frequent. July and August are the hottest and driest months, with highs around 31°C and only 3-7 rain days, but they can feel intense. The rainiest stretch is November, with 16 rain days, while October and December also see frequent showers. For pleasant sightseeing, aim for late spring or early autumn to avoid the peak heat and crowds.
Stay in the Old Town (Stari grad) for the medieval atmosphere, with sights like the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon and the Clock Tower right outside your door. The waterfront along the bay, including Dobrota and Prcanj, suits those who prefer sea views and quieter evenings. The area around the Kotor Cable Car offers easy access to the upper station and the fortress trail. Historic Boutique Hotel Cattaro and Boutique Hotel Astoria are in the Old Town, while Hotel Libertas is in Prcanj.
Kotor Fortress offers the iconic climb with sweeping bay views. Kampana Tower is a key medieval landmark in the old town. The Kotor Cable Car's upper station gives a quick panorama of the fjord-like bay. Cathedral of Saint Tryphon is the city's historic Romanesque church. Kotor Serpentine is the scenic switchback road above town.
Full-day tours from Kotor head to Durmitor National Park and Tara Canyon, with Black Lake and the canyon's dramatic gorge. Another tour goes to Lovćen National Park, the mausoleum, the Crnojević River, and Sveti Stefan. These cover Montenegro's mountains, coast, and historic sites in a single day.
Plan 2 to 3 days in Kotor. In two days, you can explore the Old Town, climb the Kotor Fortress, visit the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon, and ride the cable car. Add a third day for a day trip to places like Lovcen or Durmitor, which requires an extra day beyond your city sightseeing.
