A beautiful resort-like stay. We had a wonderful stay at the InterContinental Kunming. The hotel is gorgeous, with incredibly lush, resort-like grounds. Our room had a fantastic balcony with a comfortable daybed overlooking the trees and distant mountains—it was the perfect place to relax. The property itself is a joy to explore, with beautiful bamboo-lined paths, a lovely koi pond, and a very serene spa area. The only downside during our visit was that the swimming pool and gym were closed for maintenance, so we didn't get a chance to use or rate them. However, the way the hotel handled this really exceeded our expectations. The management apologized for the inconvenience and offered us complimentary access to the Club InterContinental as a gesture of goodwill. This turned out to be a highlight of our trip! The Club is located on the 1st floor and features a luxurious veranda. From 14:30, guests enjoy a lovely selection of drinks, desserts, and snacks. Sitting out on the veranda was magical—the garden provides perfect, cool shade, and you can hear birds singing and even see butterflies flying around. The dessert displays (especially the mousse cakes) were beautifully presented and delicious. Even though we missed out on the pool, the excellent hospitality and the stunning Club lounge experience more than made up for it. I highly recommend this hotel if you are in Kunming and want a peaceful, green escape with good service!

The hotel’s layout makes getting around extremely time-consuming. I was traveling with my entire family, including my parents and children — three generations in total. We booked three rooms and stayed for five nights. Every time we went out for a meal or an activity, it felt like organizing a small-scale migration across the hotel. Unfortunately, the hotel also does not provide delivery robots, which would have been particularly useful given the large distances involved. During the peak season, the hotel was clearly understaffed. The waiting time for room service was consistently very long, and the breakfast restaurant was extremely crowded. It was obvious that all the staff were doing their best and working very hard, and I genuinely appreciate their efforts. However, it was equally clear that the number of guests and the level of demand far exceeded the hotel’s service capacity. We also experienced difficulties when trying to pay with a Mastercard during check-in. Although the payment was eventually completed successfully, the process took an unnecessarily long time. For a five-star international hotel, having such difficulties processing an international bank card is quite disappointing and should not happen. Overall, I feel that the experience at the InterContinental Kunming fell well short of what I would expect from a five-star resort hotel, especially considering the price we paid. The staff were clearly making every effort, but the overall service capacity and guest experience simply did not match the hotel’s positioning as a luxury five-star property.

Our stay at InterContinental Kunming was exactly what you would expect from a true five-star international luxury hotel. The property is beautifully maintained, exceptionally clean, and offers a peaceful resort-like atmosphere that feels like a welcome escape from the bustle of the city.The grounds are stunning, especially with the beautiful jacaranda flowers in bloom, which made the hotel even more picturesque. The breakfast selection was excellent, with a wide variety of quality options to start the day.What truly stood out, however, was the Concierge team. I would especially like to thank Mr. Smulin and the entire team for their outstanding professionalism and dedication. Prior to our arrival, they assisted with receiving several packages on our behalf. When an issue arose involving a missing package, Mr. Smulin and team went above and beyond to help track it down, coordinate the recovery process, and even arrange for it to be forwarded to another hotel on our itinerary.This level of service is rare and demonstrates genuine care for guests. Their responsiveness, attention to detail, and commitment to helping us resolve the issue made a huge difference to our trip.Thank you to Mr. Smulin and the entire Concierge team for your exceptional hospitality. I would gladly recommend InterContinental Kunming to anyone visiting Kunming and would not hesitate to stay here again.

My family (my wife, daughter, and I) recently spent four wonderful days and three nights at InterContinental Kunming, and it was truly one of the most memorable resort stays we have enjoyed in recent years. From the moment we arrived, the experience was seamless. The check-in process was smooth and efficient, and our daughter was delighted to receive a thoughtful welcome gift featuring local Yunnan specialties, including a traditional souvenir charm and tea. Such small touches made us feel genuinely welcomed and reflected the hotel's attention to detail. Our room was spacious, comfortable, and blessed with a lovely view. Throughout our stay, we appreciated the resort's serene atmosphere and the beautiful natural surroundings. The breakfast, spa, fitness center, and swimming pool together provided exactly the kind of relaxation our family was hoping for. Every facility was well maintained and delivered a consistently high standard of service. One of the hotel's greatest strengths is its outstanding location beside Dianchi Lake. As an enthusiastic runner, I particularly enjoyed the easy access to Haigeng Dam. My family completed two morning runs of approximately 8 kilometers round trip directly from the hotel, allowing us to fully appreciate the beauty of the lakeside scenery at sunrise. Another highlight was the outdoor breakfast area, which felt like dining in the middle of nature. We especially enjoyed seeing the small garden where the culinary team carefully grows strawberries, herbs, and other plants used by the hotel. It added a charming and authentic touch to the overall dining experience. The miniature peacock garden was another lovely feature that gave the resort a distinctive Yunnan character and brought great joy to our daughter. Most importantly, every interaction with the hotel staff was warm, professional, and sincere. Their hospitality greatly contributed to the overall experience and made our stay feel truly special. I had an overall wonderful stay at InterContinental Kunming. The rooms, facilities, and service were all exceptional. However, the breakfast experience was a bit disappointing—the dining area was extremely crowded, and there was a noticeable lack of crowd control and order during peak hours. With better breakfast management, this hotel would be truly flawless.

Beautiful, sprawling property. Have to walk long distances, from lobby to rooms and to dining facilities. Very handicap unfriendly. But what made the place inhospitable for me is the absence anyone who can communicate in English. Even with Google Translate, we struggled. As it is the Intercontinental, an international brand, i expected a higher level of at least communicable English or any other language for that matter. My mistake? Perhaps. My advise to future travellers, get a translator if you can afford one.

We came to Kunming to get some fresh air and recharge from steamy Shanghai. We selected Intercontinental Kunming because of the location close to the lake. The location is indeed a good starting point to visit some of the other tourist attractions but you'll need a car. The hotel is a bit older and you can feel that in the rooms. However the outside with the garden and pond is great and very well kept. The breakfast is superb with lots of choices both western and chinese. The service is very good indeed like bringing the eggs to the table and have proper barista making a good coffee. Two things I need to mention is that we had a noise complaint for upstairs where kids just kept running and stamping for hours so we had to ask for another room. Noah at reception was able to change us to a much quieter room. The rooms are very clean and the cleaning staff are very nice when we asked for some more tea bags and bottles of water. Unfortunately since management can't seem to plan when to execute gardening with heavy equipment, we were rudely awakened Sunday morning at 8 am by loud chainsaws and mowers. Why do this on a Sunday morning when most guests want to sleep in and relax? Personally I find this ridiculous. You have a whole week to this work and instead you plan this on a Sunday morning? Nuts !! The second issue is smoking on the terrace at breakfast. It is so nice to be able to sit outside and enjoy the surrounding. Unfortunately we had to move inside due to people smoking. Nothing is as off-putting as eating with second hand smoke. Especially there were quite a few toddlers and babies outside whilst people smoke. There should be a ban at least during breakfast hours. This is common place throughout the rest of the world.

Beautiful hotel with so many amenities like great kids club, with each room booked you get a free picture taking session on their beautiful property (free traditional costumes, too), huge breakfast spread, and there was live music at the hotel bar the night we stayed. Only minor downside is that parts of the room felt a bit dated, but didn’t detract from the experience. The other downside is because the campus is so big, it can be slightly confusing which elevator to use because you could end up on the right floor but wrong building!

Where can I eat near InterContinental Kunming?

You can eat well without leaving the hotel. Shang Tao Chinese Restaurant serves authentic Yunnan and Cantonese dishes and has won the Black Pearl Restaurant Award. The Market offers international buffet with open kitchens and Yunnan specialties. For lighter bites, there's also the Butterfly Bar, a lobby bar, a cafe, and a snack bar. For a change of scenery, Park 1903, a shopping area with dining options, is about 1.5 km away. Dian Lake and Haigeng Dam are within a short walk, where you might find casual local food stalls.

What is the area around InterContinental Kunming like?

The hotel sits in the Xishan district, right by Dianchi Lake, with a relaxed resort feel. You’re a short walk from Haigeng Dam and about 1.5 km from Park 1903, a popular shopping and dining area. Yunnan Nationalities Village and its museum are roughly 1.6-1.7 km away, and West Hill forest park is about 3.7 km off. The city center, including Nanping Business Street, is around 8.6 km, so you’ll want a taxi or ride for that. For a quieter lakefront stay with easy access to parks and culture, this area suits you well.

How do I get to InterContinental Kunming from the airport or main train station?

From Kunming Changshui International Airport, the hotel is about 40 km away, roughly a 40 minute taxi or ride-hailing trip. From Kunming Railway Station, it is about 12 km, about 20 minutes by taxi. You can also take an airport bus line 5 to Dianchi Hotel and walk about 5 minutes to the hotel. The hotel is on Yijing Road in the Xishan District, near Dianchi Lake.

What's there to do near InterContinental Kunming in the evening?
