Kunming, the capital of Yunnan, is an easygoing highland city whose mild, year-round weather earns it the nickname Spring City. Long a gateway to the province's dramatic landscapes and ethnic-minority cultures, it also has a relaxed urban rhythm, strong Yunnan cuisine, and a comfortable style of its own.
Known for: Culture · Nature · Food · Outdoors
Visit in March or April when days are warm (23-26°C), skies are dry, and rain is scarce. May through October is the rainy season, with June to August wettest and most humid. November to February stays mild but cooler, with less rain. Spring offers the most comfortable mix of sunshine and moderate temperatures.
Stay in Wuhua District for the central location near Green Lake and Yuantong Temple, great for first-time visitors. Panlong District offers a quieter, more local feel east of downtown. For lakeside scenery and fresh air, choose Xishan District around Dianchi Lake, where hotels like Sofitel and Dianchi are located.
Kunming's must-see sights center on Green Lake (Cuihu), its most-reviewed attraction, offering a peaceful escape in the city's heart with lotus ponds and seasonal birds. Yuantong Temple, a historic Buddhist temple near the lake, is worth visiting for its ancient architecture and calm gardens. The Stone Forest, a dramatic karst landscape of towering limestone pillars, is the region's iconic natural wonder and a short trip from the city. Jiuxiang Cave, with its vast underground caverns and waterfalls, showcases Yunnan's geological beauty.
Day trips from Kunming include the Stone Forest, famous for its karst pillars, and Jiuxiang, known for its caves and underground rivers. You can also take a bullet train to Dali, where old town streets and Erhai Lake await. A self-guided Stone Forest tour is an easy option, and some tours combine the Stone Forest with a roast duck lunch in Yiliang.
Plan 3 to 4 days. Use the first day for 翠湖, the top sight, plus nearby streets and Yuantong Temple. A second day covers the Stone Forest as a full-day trip, best with the guided tour. Jiuxiang and Dali each need their own extra day, so add one for each if you want them. Three days works for the city and Stone Forest; four lets you add Jiuxiang or Dali.
