Review: A 5-Star Sanctuary for the Soul ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ If you are looking to escape the relentless neon glow of New York City or the frantic pace of Tokyo, La Terra in Nagano is the ultimate detox for the modern world. I visited in April 2026, and it was exactly the "green therapy" of the Spring season of Japan as I needed to step away from computer screens and day-to-day digital distractions. The Essence of Quietude This is a place for self-reflection and nature, not for those seeking a "food connoisseur" experience or the butler service of a Hilton or Ritz-Carlton. If you come here expecting Marriott-style room service, you are missing the point. La Terra is a hidden gem designed for total immersion in the Japanese countryside. There are no TV monitors in the rooms, ensuring you stay off electronics and truly engage with your surroundings. (This is my personal taste). Highlights of the my experience The "Sound of Rain" Therapy: I stayed in one of the tent/tarp houses. During a rainy night, the sound of water hitting the canvas was incredibly therapeutic—perfect for meditation. A Different Kind of Luxury: While rustic, the amenities are thoughtful. The showers are excellent, and they feature the high-tech Japanese toilets that we Americans always find ourselves jealous of back home! The Atmosphere: The main building is a century-old rustic structure filled with antiques and art. Outside, you’ll find beautiful rose gardens, a stream, and even an interesting rose-petal perfume distillery. One of the most fascinating aspects of the resort is their scented oil distillery. I was fortunate enough to go inside the "maker room" to see the process firsthand, where they use fresh flower petals to create delicate, natural perfumes. Witnessing the craftsmanship behind these scents was a highlight of my stay; it’s a rare, sensory experience that perfectly complements the surrounding rose gardens and emphasizes the resort’s focus on natural beauty. The Pets: I absolutely adored the resident Husky dogs with their striking blue eyes—they are the perfect companions for this peaceful retreat but those dog are not available for most of the time as they live in their own world and if you happened to be there when they get out for their daily walks or play time under the supervision of the staff you are lucky to see them. I didn't touch or pet them. So don't think this is a place for petting time and they are not for public play time, its a chance of moment if you are lucky to see them. Feeling of a meditative retreat I spent my time enjoying coffee under the tarp and taking short hikes between mindfulness meditation sessions. Sitting on the sofa or by the private tub at the back of the tent allowed for a level of reflection that is impossible in a city noise environment. So adore it while you can... Travel Tip: I took the Bullet Train to Nagoya, then the JR rail to Shiojiri Station, where a taxi was pre-arranged to take me to the resort. For the price, the quietness and the "tech detox" are worth every penny (my personal point of view and from my mindfulness meditation time I was able to experience while I was there). I guess,, If you want to trade LCD displays for hillsides and bird songs, rain sound as rain drop falling on the roof of the room, I think this is your place to go. Highly recommended for those who value peace over pomp.

Staying at La Terra Resort was an absolute dream. The atmosphere, the perfectly curated property, and the delicious meals were all wonderful—but what truly made the experience unforgettable were the people. The team behind the scenes, along with the staff, made us feel so cared for and welcomed. One of the highlights was meeting Roshan, the owner. Learning about his colorful background and how La Terra came to be added such a personal and inspiring layer to our stay. He is a man of many talents, and if you’re lucky enough to meet him during your visit, don’t miss the chance to ask about the antiques on the property—each piece holds so much history and culture. Adding to the charm are the lovely dogs who are very much part of the family at La Terra. Their gentle presence made the property feel even warmer and more like home. We left feeling refreshed, inspired, and already excited to return. Hopefully one day soon, we’ll also get to experience Roshan’s other properties.

I am deeply disappointed about the breakfast. ~~ the turned brown colour apple (not fresh, pending long time before serving. ~~ warm but not fresh bread which was serving WITHOUT jam n butter. ~~ half egg + 2 pcs boiled sausage + vegetable soup which were serving in ONE pot. It was the WORST breakfast experience of my travel life even I can have hot pancake serving with honey & jam + fresh fried egg… etc at tea house of Everest Base Camp with attitude 5364m.

Our experience at La Terra was wonderful! The atmosphere, location, staff, quality of food and scenic backdrop were perfect and everything tied together perfectly. The fresh fruit and produce is grown right there on the land and harvested from field to plate. The dogs on the premises were absolutely adorable and the owner Roshan is beyond accommodating, as is the staff. Roshan is an absolute visionary, a pioneer in his craft and a man of many talents and it was truly inspiring speaking to him and getting to know him. The staff were absolutely wonderful - so welcoming! We look forward to staying there again! Thank you Roshan and staff for the hospitality!

This place is a gem ! We had an amazing stay at La Terra Villa! We actually went to the wrong La Terra in Narai by mistake, but their team was so kind and even fetched us to the right location. The villa itself is serene and perfect for relaxing, with beautiful huskies to meet and the most delicious farm-to-table food. Warm hospitality, stunning setting, and memorable experiences — highly recommend! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

We stayed there for 2 nights. The staff was very friendly and helpful. On the day of leaving, we were so tired and didn't have the energy to wake up for breakfast. The staff was so nice

This is a glamping resort in the middle of the Japanese mountains. Absolutely beautiful and serene environment. The chef cooks with only home grown vegetables, farm to table concept. It is far from everything so there is nothing in the surrounding. The owner is very friendly and loves what he is doing. Definitely recommend this place for anyone that enjoys countryside or plans to hike along the Nakasendo trail.

Disclamer: we communicated this in private to the owner but he never replied. While LA TERRA is visually beautiful and the food was excellent, the overall experience fell short in several frustrating ways, especially given the steep price. Communication was poor throughout. We weren’t informed about key activities like the vineyard visit (which we missed), nor told about extra charges in advance for things like shuttle service and pizza night. Promises—such as sending our pottery to Tokyo—were simply forgotten. The “forest therapy” walk was nothing more than a stroll through a neglected golf course with trash lying around—hardly relaxing or therapeutic. The comfort level of the main building was disappointing. Our rooms were poorly insulated. The bathrooms were very cold and had an very poor heating setups (or none at all - which is almost unbelievablefor a resort in the mountains). Room keys failed repeatedly. Basic housekeeping was inconsistent or completely absent. Even after asking. This place clearly has potential, but right now it’s charging luxury prices for a very uneven experience. Aesthetic charm and good food can’t make up for so many basic missteps.
