The best time to visit Nagoya is in April and May, when temperatures are mild and the city is at its most pleasant. October and November are also good, with comfortable weather and fewer rain days. The rainiest stretch is from June to September, with August being the wettest and hottest, so you may want to avoid that period. Winter months are dry but cold, with January and February seeing the least rain.
Stay near Nagoya Station for easy train access and the JR Gate Tower, Marriott, and Nikko Style hotels. Sakae is the downtown entertainment and shopping district, with the Hilton, Tokyu, and Dormy Inn nearby. For a quieter, more local feel, consider the area around Hisaya Odori Park, close to Oasis 21 and the MIRAI TOWER.
Nagoya Castle is the city's iconic landmark with its golden shachihoko and reconstructed keep. Atsuta-jingu Shrine is one of Japan's most important Shinto shrines, housing a sacred sword. The Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and Technology showcases the region's industrial heritage with interactive exhibits. Oasis 21 offers a futuristic glass structure and views over the city. Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens combines a zoo, botanical garden, and observation tower in one green space.
You can take day trips to Ghibli Park, the Nakasendo Trail, and Ise Grand Shrine with Meoto Iwa and Mikimoto Pearl Island. Ghibli Park is a themed area with Studio Ghibli attractions. The Nakasendo Trail offers historic hiking through a preserved post town. Ise Grand Shrine is a major Shinto site, and the tour also covers the sacred rocks and pearl island. A private custom tour can also be arranged to suit your interests.
Plan 3 days for Nagoya: day one for Nagoya Castle and Atsuta-jingu Shrine, day two for the Toyota Commemorative Museum and Oasis 21, and day three for Legoland Japan or the science museum. If you add a day trip like Ghibli Park or the Nakasendo Trail, you will need a fourth day. Two days can cover the main sights, but three feels more relaxed.
