Hotel St. Marie

The best time to visit is March through May, when temperatures are warm but not too hot, and rain is moderate. October is also ideal, with fewer rain days and pleasant highs around 26°C. Summer, especially July, is the hottest and rainiest stretch, with frequent afternoon showers. Mardi Gras in February or March draws big crowds, so plan for that if you want to join the festival.

Stay in the French Quarter for the heart of the action, with Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, and the Hotel Monteleone or Bourbon Orleans Hotel right there. The Central Business District, home to The Roosevelt and The Ritz-Carlton, suits those wanting a quieter base within walking distance of the Quarter. The Garden District offers a more residential feel with its historic mansions and streetcar access, though it's a bit farther from the main sights.

Jackson Square is the historic heart with the cathedral and lively artists. City Park offers vast green space, ancient oaks, and the art museum. The Audubon Aquarium and Zoo are top family draws, with the Insectarium nearby. Steamboat Natchez gives a classic river cruise view. Mardi Gras World shows how parade floats are made.

Take a full-day tour to Oak Alley Plantation, a historic antebellum estate with its famous oak-lined avenue, and combine it with a swamp boat ride through the bayous to see alligators and local wildlife. The hop-on hop-off bus tour covers the city itself, so for a day trip beyond that, consider the nearby plantations or the swamps. These are the two bookable full-day options from the city.

Plan 3 to 4 days. In 3 days, see Jackson Square, the French Quarter, City Park, and the Audubon Zoo or Aquarium. Add a 4th day for Mardi Gras World and the New Orleans Museum of Art. If you take the swamp and Oak Alley day trip, add one more day.
