The best time to visit is March, with warm days around 20°C and fewer rain days than most months. January and February are the warmest, but also humid and rainy. From June to August it is cooler and wetter, with highs around 12-13°C. October to December sees more rain, so aim for late summer or early autumn for the most pleasant weather.

Stay near the city center on Fenton Street for easy access to restaurants, shops, and the Polynesian Spa; it suits first-time visitors. The lakeside Kawaha Point area offers quieter views of Lake Rotorua, with hotels like On the Point and Black Swan Lakeside. For a more secluded stay, Lake Tarawera, where Solitaire Lodge sits, suits those wanting nature and calm. Choose the center for convenience, Kawaha Point for lake views, or Tarawera for a retreat.

Start with Te Puia for its geysers, mud pools, and Maori cultural performances. The Redwoods Treewalk offers a unique walkway through the forest canopy. Polynesian Spa is a relaxing lakeside thermal bath experience. Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland showcases colorful geothermal formations. Whakarewarewa is a living Maori village with guided tours and thermal areas.

The full-day tours from Rotorua go to Hobbiton, the movie set from The Lord of the Rings, and to Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland, known for its colorful geothermal pools. Both are popular day trips. If you prefer to stay closer, you could also visit the nearby lakes or the town of Tauranga, but those are not covered by the listed tours.

Plan 2 to 3 days in Rotorua. In two days, you can see Te Puia, the Redwoods Treewalk, and Polynesian Spa, plus visit Kuirau Park and Whakarewarewa. Add a third day for Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland or Skyline Rotorua. If you take a day trip to Hobbiton, plan an extra day.
