Villa Floeckner Bed and Breakfast

The best time to visit is May through September, when days are warm and long, with June and September offering the most comfortable temperatures and fewer rain days. July and August are the warmest but also the rainiest, so pack for showers. Spring and autumn are pleasant but cooler, while winter is cold and damp, though the Christmas markets are a draw.

Stay in the Old Town (Altstadt) for the fortress, cathedral, and Mozart's Birthplace, with hotels like Hotel Sacher and Hotel Goldener Hirsch. The New Town, around Mirabell Palace, suits those wanting quieter streets and easy access to the gardens, with Imlauer Hotel Pitter as an option. Elisabeth-Vorstadt is a practical base near the main station, with Villa Elisa and Radisson Blu nearby.

Start at Fortress Hohensalzburg for sweeping views over the old town. Mirabell Palace and its gardens are a short walk away, with formal flower beds and a marble hall. Mozart's Birthplace on Getreidegasse shows where the composer grew up, and the street itself is lined with wrought-iron shop signs. Hellbrunn Palace, just south, is known for its trick fountains and water-powered grottoes. Salzburg Cathedral anchors the historic center with its baroque dome and wide plaza.

Day trips from Salzburg go to Hallstatt, a lakeside village with alpine views, and the Salzkammergut lake district. The Sound of Music tour visits filming locations around the city and nearby countryside. The salt mines tour takes you underground in the region's historic mines. These tours cover Hallstatt, lakes, mountains, and the 5 Fingers viewpoint.

Plan 2 to 3 days in Salzburg. In two days, you can see Fortress Hohensalzburg, Mirabell Palace, Mozart's Birthplace, and Salzburg Cathedral, plus stroll Getreidegasse. Add a third day for Hellbrunn Palace and its trick fountains. If you want to take a day trip to Hallstatt or the Salzkammergut lakes, plan an extra day.
