The best time to visit is April through June, when temperatures are mild (19-22°C) and rain is rare. September and October are also pleasant, with warm days around 24-25°C and few rain days. July and August are the warmest and driest, but humidity is higher. The rainiest stretch is March, with nine rain days, while December through February can be cooler and wetter. For the most comfortable weather, aim for late spring or early fall.

For a central base, stay in the City Center, near the waterfront and Gaslamp Quarter, with easy access to Balboa Park and the bay. Pacific Beach suits a laid-back beach stay, with the boardwalk and Belmont Park nearby. La Jolla offers a scenic, upscale coastal area with coves and the Birch Aquarium. Shelter Island is a quiet, marina-side choice, though it's farther from the main sights.

Balboa Park is the city's cultural heart, with museums and gardens. SeaWorld San Diego offers marine life shows and exhibits. Old Town San Diego State Historic Park preserves the city's early history. Mission Bay Park is a large waterfront area for outdoor activities. Cabrillo National Monument provides sweeping views and a historic lighthouse.

The full-day tour from San Diego goes to Tijuana, Mexico, just across the border, where you can experience a different culture and cuisine. For other well-known day trips, consider heading north to La Jolla for its coves and tide pools, or east to the mountains of Julian for a small-town feel. Each of these makes a full day out from the city.

Plan 4 to 5 days. Spend 2 days on Balboa Park, including the Japanese Friendship Garden, and Old Town San Diego State Historic Park. Use another day for SeaWorld San Diego and Mission Bay Park, plus Belmont Park nearby. Add a day for Cabrillo National Monument and Waterfront Park, and a fifth day if you take the Tijuana day trip.
