The best time to visit Shanghai is in October and November, when temperatures are mild (18-24°C) and rain is less frequent. April and May are also pleasant, with warm days and moderate humidity. Avoid June through September, as it is hot and rainy, especially July and August with highs above 33°C and frequent downpours. Winter months are dry but chilly, with January and February seeing lows near 1-3°C.
For first-time visitors, stay near the Bund or People's Square for easy access to the waterfront and major sights. The former French Concession, around Xintiandi and Huaihai Road, suits those who enjoy tree-lined streets and cafes. The Shanghai Museum is worth a visit for its ancient Chinese art collections.
Full-day tours from Shanghai go to Suzhou, known for its classical gardens and canals, and Zhouzhuang, a water village with old bridges and houses. Zhujiajiao is another water town option, with its own canals and stone streets. These trips are a good way to see the region beyond the city.
Plan 3 to 4 days for Shanghai. In 3 days, see The Bund, Yu Garden, Shanghai Tower, and Tianzifang, plus a museum like Shanghai Museum or Jing'an Temple.
