The best time to visit Suzhou is in April, May, September, and October, when temperatures are mild and rain is less frequent. June and July are the rainiest and most humid months, while July and August are the hottest. Winters are cool and dry, with January and December having the fewest rain days. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather for exploring the classical gardens.
Stay near Guanqian Street for the old town center, close to shops and classic gardens. The Jinji Lake area suits those wanting a modern lakeside setting with easy access to the expo center. For a quieter, historic feel, consider the area around Tiger Hill. The Lavande Hotel (Suzhou Guanqian) is in the city center, while Novotel Suzhou SIP and Life All Suites Hotel are by Jinji Lake.
The Humble Administrator's Garden is the largest and most celebrated classical garden in Suzhou, with winding paths, ponds, and pavilions. Lion Grove Garden is known for its intricate rockery maze, a playful contrast to the Humble Administrator's calm. The Lingering Garden (留园) is another UNESCO-listed classical garden, famed for its elegant halls and carefully framed views. These three gardens together capture the essence of Suzhou's classical garden art.
The full-day tours from Suzhou go to Tongli Water Town, where you can see the Tuisi Garden, a classic example of a Jiangnan water town. Other tours cover Suzhou's own classical gardens and food scene, or offer a flexible private car itinerary. If you prefer to go further, Shanghai is a well-known day trip from Suzhou by train, with its Bund and modern skyline. A day trip to the nearby water town of Zhouzhuang is also a common choice, known for its canals and bridges.
Plan 2 to 3 days for Suzhou. In two days, you can visit the Humble Administrator's Garden and Lion Grove Garden, plus a classical garden like 留园, and explore the old city. With a third day, add a trip to Tongli water town, which needs an extra day. This pace lets you enjoy the gardens without rushing.
