This onsen is not tattoo-friendly. I called on the phone to ask and they confirmed that tattoos are not allowed. If you have a tattoo and want to soak in Takayama, I recommend you go instead to Takanoyu, where they will welcome your tattoos!

I wish I could put less than a star! I usually never complain, but this place os a real scam! The onsen as the dormitory as the staff (except the female staff at reception and restaurant) were just awful 😞 please don't put yourself in disgrace going there, it is the most dirty place I have been in Japan and even in other country! One last word: disgusting!

Awful. It was the only thing available during the Takayama autumn festival so we had to stay here. We ended up sleeping of very thin futon on the floor. They did not provide sheets, nor did they even have sheets that you could rent. You are expected to sleep on the mattress liner, and I cannot imagine that they wash these very often. They give you a blanket that looks like something out of your grandmother’s closet. Had to rent a towels to sleep on. The staff does generally not speak good English. There was one woman that was helpful. Also, the shuttle bus to the hostel was not on time, it was early. So, if you do stay here (please don’t), I suggest that you get there 15-10 minutes early just in case.

I’ve stayed in some very cheap and dodgy hostels in my time. This one takes the cake. It is a bath house for locals, which is fine. Accommodation is the poorest of the poor. Don’t stay here unless you have no choice. Could only do one night out of pure desperation.

It was bit out of the Takayama city center but they offer free shuttle bus services. Please refer to Google map review for shuttle bus time table or go to the Washington Hotel and inquire about the shuttle bus time table, which right in front of Takayama Train station where the shuttle bus pick up drop off location to & from the hostel. It’s an old school authentic Japanese onsen specially designed for local people. It’s perfect if you are up for a real deal Japanese onsen experience. It’s no fancy hostel with English speaking host or receptionist, don’t expect to meet too many backpacks or tourist as well. If you are here just because you can’t find a cheap hostel than you are up for a culture shock of your life… please go there with open heart & open mind… you might love it like myself & Elza did. … and we miss it a lot. It was true Japanese onsen experience.

This place has it all. It's more so on the bath house/spa side of things than the rustic onsen feel that you can experience in Okuhida onsengo. However, don't let that deter you. This spa is a blast from the past; it feels like time has been frozen in the 90s here in all the best ways. This is a true piece of japanese culture. Go here, take your time, try all the baths, the sauna, wash off, hit the relaxation area, have a meal, etc.. Just soak it all in. Literally and figuratively. Don't forget your chance of clothes, a big towel, and a small one. If you don't have towels, you can rent them. Go to this hot spring. I can't recommend it highly enough.
