TOKYU STAY Hida-Takayama Musubi no Yu

The best times to visit are April, May, and October, when temperatures are mild and rain is less frequent. June and September are warm but humid, while July and August are the hottest and rainiest months, with over 20 rain days each. Winter months are cold and snowy, but the clear, crisp days can be pleasant for seeing the old town. Plan for spring or autumn to enjoy comfortable weather and seasonal scenery.

Stay in the Old Town (Sanmachi) for traditional atmosphere and easy access to sights like Takayama Jinya and the morning markets; HONJIN HIRANOYA KACHOAN and BEKKAN are there. Near Takayama Station is convenient for transit and dining, with hotels like Ryokan Asunaro and Residence Hotel Takayama Station. For a quieter, scenic option, the hillside area around Kuraiyama suits those wanting a resort feel, where Hilton Takayama Resort is located.

Start with the Miyagawa Morning Markets for local food and crafts. Takayama Jinya is the preserved former government house, a rare look at Edo-period administration. Hida no Sato Folk Village Museum shows traditional thatched-roof farmhouses. The Hidatakayama Sanmachi Historic District is the old town with wooden merchant houses. Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine is known for its autumn festival floats.

Full-day tours from Takayama head to Shinhotaka Ropeway and Kamikochi for alpine views, and to the UNESCO World Heritage villages of Shirakawago and Gokayama, known for their gassho-zukuri farmhouses. A one-way bus option also connects Takayama to Kanazawa via Shirakawa-go. These trips take a full day, so plan accordingly.

Plan 2 days to see the main sights: the Miyagawa Morning Markets, Takayama Jinya, the Sanmachi Historic District, and Hida no Sato Folk Village Museum. Add a third day for a day trip to Shirakawa-go or Kamikochi, which are popular full-day excursions from the city. If you want to include the Shinhotaka Ropeway or the Hida Great Limestone Cave, allow an extra day as well.
