Woodford Hill
Woodford Hill is a small village on Dominica's northeast coast where a stretch of golden sand meets calm Atlantic waters, where sugar-plantation ruins still stand at the seashore, and where the pace of island life is set by fishermen mending nets rather than resort music. Tucked between Wesley and Calibishie in Saint Andrew Parish, this stretch of coastline offers something increasingly rare in the Caribbean: a beach you can snorkel, swim in, and walk along without a single sun-lounger or cocktail umbrella in sight. The village itself is modest and rooted. The Kokoy dialect of English Creole is still spoken here, carried over by Antiguan and Montserratian settlers generations ago. Plantain and banana farms fringe the road. A primary school, a health centre, and a playing field form the quiet social backbone. But the real pull for visitors is the landscape that surrounds it: sheltered swimming coves, offshore coral reefs reachable in a few strokes from shore, and headland trails where you might spot a sea turtle coming up for air at Turtle Point. For travellers who have already ticked off Dominica's famous waterfalls and sulphur springs, Woodford Hill is the coastal exhale — a place to add a slow beach morning to a day of exploring the north, or to anchor a quieter stretch of your itinerary away from the west-coast crowds.
