AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Kalinago Barana Autê—meaning "Kalinago Village by the Sea"—is a re-created indigenous village and cultural centre on Dominica's rugged Atlantic coast, set in the protected Kalinago Territory near Bataka. It is the agreed meeting place where visitors and members of Dominica's indigenous Kalinago community come together to share storytelling, song, dance and centuries-old craft.↗↗↗
Built to mirror traditional living arrangements and honour ancestral architecture, the village turns a short visit into a genuine encounter with a living culture: artisans work daily demonstrating basket-weaving, canoe-making and cassava-baking, and cultural presentations unfold in a great thatched Karbet, or men's house.↗↗
Beyond the crafts, the setting itself is a draw, with the Crayfish River running through the village, dramatic sea views, walking trails and the nearby tiered Isulukati Falls. A guided tour takes only 30 to 45 minutes, making Barana Autê an easy and rewarding stop on any day spent exploring Dominica's east coast.
