sông Chợ Đệm
The Chợ Đệm River (sông Chợ Đệm) is a low, silty waterway threading through Bình Chánh district on Ho Chi Minh City's western edge, where the city dissolves into the Long An plain. It is not a postcard river with promenades or tourist piers; its interest lies in being a working river—the last Saigon reach of an old water road that once carried the goods, grain and gossip of the Mekong Delta up toward the capital. Forming one segment of the Kênh Đôi–Kênh Tẻ–Chợ Đệm–Bến Lức inland waterway, it links Ho Chi Minh City to the Đồng Tháp Mười and Long Xuyên quadrangle, meeting the Vàm Cỏ Đông downriver at Bến Lức. Today it still serves barges and sand boats, hemmed by expressways, bridges and warehouses, while along its quiet banks survive a two-century-old communal house, the memory of a market famous for its offal congee, and the echo of the meetings that set Nam Bộ ablaze in August 1945.
