A Merchant Prince's Riverside Home

The story behind the house is as grand as its joinery. It was raised in the Year of the Metal Tiger—1890—by Trần Văn Lân, one of the richest men in old Thủ Dầu Một, who made his fortune trading timber and ran sawmills and shipyards along the Saigon River and up toward the Cambodian frontier. The home was built for his son Trần Văn Hổ, whose courtesy name was Đẩu and who had risen to the rank of Đốc Phủ Sứ, a senior colonial-era official comparable to a provincial chief. That is why locals have long called the place 'Nhà Đốc Phủ Đẩu'—the house of Prefect Đẩu.↗↗↗

Facing the water, the residence was deliberately turned southwest toward the river—an auspicious orientation prized by southern landowners, and practical for a family whose business lived on the Saigon. According to the house's longtime custodian, the original compound was far larger than the single main building that survives today, with subsidiary houses and even a horse stable; several outlying structures were lost to the two wars. The story goes that some three hundred craftsmen were brought up from the old imperial capital of Huế and worked for three years to put it together.↗↗

Inside the T-Shaped Timber Hall

The surviving main house is built in the classic southern 'Đinh' (T) plan—three bays with two side wings—on a footprint of about 200 square metres within a grounds of roughly 1,296 square metres. Thirty-six round wooden columns stand in six rows, each footed on a stone plinth rather than sunk into the floor, over a terracotta-tiled base. The whole structure is sheathed in precious hardwoods—rosewood, padauk, and other dense local timbers—layered and aligned so that symmetry and stately proportion greet you at every turn.↗↗↗

Carving and calligraphy carry the house's moral message. Above the main door three Sino-Vietnamese characters proclaim 'Harmony is precious,' and the panels and couplets throughout—many in Hán-Nôm script—preach diligence, thrift, study and filial duty. Look for the raised-carving worship canopy crowning the central altar, carved with the four sacred animals (dragon, unicorn, tortoise and phoenix); for the plum-orchid-chrysanthemum-bamboo (tứ bình) motifs chasing across window frames and lintels; and for two mother-of-pearl inlaid panels whose characters for long life are themselves drawn from birds and blossoms. Flanking the central altar are the master's and mistress's chambers, their lintels lettered with wishes for advancement at the exam hall.↗

The courtyard was once decorated with scenes of the four classic livelihoods—fisherman, woodcutter, farmer and herdsman—a snapshot of how this corner of Bình Dương once made its living. One telling detail from the custodian's account of old family rules: the main house was off-limits to women, even the owner's daughters and granddaughters, a window onto the strict patriarchy of a prosperous southern clan a century ago.↗↗

Heritage Status and a Walkable Neighbourhood

The house was recognised as a national architectural-art heritage site in the early 1990s, alongside a small cluster of surviving grand homes in this province. Today it is looked after by descendants and family managers rather than a state museum, with the authorities stepping in mainly to fund restoration. A second Trần clan house, the 1892 home of Trần Công Vàng, stands behind it and shares the same distinction, making this one stretch of Bạch Đằng Street a pocket of merchant-era architecture.↗↗↗

One note on geography: this address was historically in the city of Thủ Dầu Một, in Bình Dương Province. Since the 1 July 2025 administrative merger, Bình Dương has folded into Ho Chi Minh City, which is why mapping services now list the site under 'Ho Chi Minh'—the old ward name and riverside location are unchanged.↗↗

Making the Most of a Visit

The house rewards visitors who care for craft and history more than for spectacle. Come to study the joinery at close range, to read the carved and inlaid panels, and to imagine the river-trade wealth that built it. Its position right by the Saigon riverbank and within easy walking distance of Thủ Dầu Một market makes it simple to combine the quiet, reverent interior of a 19th-century family altar with the noisy, fresh-air energy of a southern Vietnamese market on the same outing.↗↗

For a fuller day out, planners position the house along the Saigon river corridor, an easy pairing with other heritage and craft stops in the wider area—pottery-making quarters, river orchards and theFirebase-tempered Phú Lợi prison site—so it slots well into a culture-focused half-day radiating out from old Thủ Dầu Một.↗
