A car-free 5 day Malta itinerary: Valletta on foot, the Hypogeum slot, Mdina by bus, Gozo by ferry and Birgu across the harbour, with closure dates and what to cut.
Fortrip Editorial Team
By the Fortrip editors. The Heritage Malta closure list below was read on 5 Nov 2026.
This 5 day Malta itinerary suits first-time visitors who want the main sights without a car. Days 1 and 2 stay in Valletta, Day 3 is Mdina and Rabat by bus, Day 4 is Gozo via the Ċirkewwa ferry, and Day 5 crosses the Grand Harbour to Birgu and Senglea, with Marsaxlokk as an optional extra.
The pace is steady: two Valletta days, one early start inland, one long ferry day and a lighter finish. Sleep in Valletta all five nights, because every route here starts from its bus terminus or its harbour. The trade-off is that Gozo gets a single day with no overnight, and Day 2 is fixed by whichever Hypogeum slot you can get. Want a different length? Compare options on itinerary selection.
No. There is no reservation system and boarding is first come, first served, per Gozo Channel. The crossing from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr takes about 25 minutes.
About 35-45 minutes per one local guide, with a 2017 museum page saying about half an hour. Malta Public Transport lists routes 50, 51, 52, 53 and 56 to Saqqajja Square in Rabat, and Mdina's gate is a walk uphill.
On 5 Nov 2026 the Heritage Malta opening-hours page listed the Grand Master's Palace State Rooms on set Wednesdays, the Throne Room, the Fortress Builders Interpretation Centre and the Fort St Elmo WW1 display. Dates are in the closure table in the guide.
Try the day-before outlets listed on the Heritage Malta Hypogeum page, then keep Day 2 in Valletta with the Co-Cathedral and Fort St Elmo.
Fit “5 day malta itinerary” to your dates, pace, and hotels, then check every transfer before you book.
Plan it in FortripA 5 day Denmark itinerary on one Copenhagen base: Nyhavn and Strøget, Tivoli timed to the 16:30 Nimb show, Kronborg by train, and a Frederiksborg or Roskilde day.
A five-day winter plan from one Ljubljana base: the festive market, Lake Bled and Postojna Cave as day trips, worked timing tables for Days 3 and 4, and advice on which day to cut, swap or extend.
| Day | Base for the day | Key stops | Transit |
|---|
| 1 | Valletta | Upper Barrakka Gardens, Grand Master's Palace, Republic Street, Lower Barrakka | On foot |
| 2 | Valletta and Paola | Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum, St John's Co-Cathedral | Bus to Paola via the Malta Public Transport planner |
| 3 | Rabat and Mdina | Mdina Gate, St Paul's Cathedral square, St Paul's Catacombs, Domvs Romana | Routes 50, 51, 52, 53 or 56 to Saqqajja Square, about 35-45 minutes per one local guide |
| 4 | Gozo | Mġarr, Victoria, Ċittadella, Ġgantija in Xagħra | Ferry about 25 minutes per Gozo Channel, plus buses on both islands |
| 5 | Birgu and Senglea | Fort St Angelo, Inquisitor's Palace, Gardjola Gardens, optional Marsaxlokk | Bus or harbour ferry across the Grand Harbour |
The Ħal Saflieni Hypogeum is the only stop here that needs advance booking. Heritage Malta's Hypogeum page says to book early. Its 2022 Access Statement caps tours at 10 visitors and says they usually book about six weeks ahead.
Book this first and arrange the other days around the slot you get.
Last-minute tickets are sold the day before at set outlets, according to the Hypogeum page, which carries the outlet list. If that fails, keep Day 2 as a Valletta-only day with the Co-Cathedral and Fort St Elmo.
St John's Co-Cathedral is closed on Sundays and public holidays, per the Co-Cathedral site. Day 2 must never fall on a Sunday.
Put Gozo (Day 4) or Birgu (Day 5) on your Sunday. If Sunday lands on Day 2, swap Day 2 with Day 4 or Day 5 and leave Days 1 and 3 where they are.
Ticket prices and opening hours at these sites change, so this guide prints none and points to the page that holds each. The one exception is the Hypogeum, where the 2022 Access Statement gives 09:00-17:00 as its hours; confirm the current hours on the Hypogeum page before you book.
| Item | Where it is listed |
|---|---|
| Hypogeum tickets and hours | Heritage Malta Hypogeum page |
| Co-Cathedral tickets and hours | St John's Co-Cathedral site |
| Ċittadella, Ġgantija, Fort St Angelo, Inquisitor's Palace, catacombs | Heritage Malta opening hours |
| Gozo passenger fare and last sailing | Gozo Channel |
| Bus times and fares | Malta Public Transport planner or the Tallinja app |
Last admission at every Heritage Malta site is 30 minutes before closing, per the opening-hours page.
No. The plan uses walking in Valletta, the public bus to Rabat and Mdina, the Gozo Channel ferry, and a bus or harbour ferry to Birgu. Bus times shift with traffic, so run each leg through the planner the night before.
The Heritage Malta opening-hours page listed these closures on 5 Nov 2026.
| Site | Closure |
|---|---|
| Grand Master's Palace State Rooms | Closed until 13:30 on 18 Nov 2026, 2 Dec 2026, and Wednesdays 27 Jan, 24 Feb, 17 Mar, 14 Apr, 26 May and 16 Jun 2027. Only the Armoury is open on those mornings. |
| Grand Master's Palace Throne Room | Closed until further notice |
| Fortress Builders Interpretation Centre, Valletta | Closed to visitors until further notice since 15 September 2026 |
| Fort St Elmo, WW1 display in Section 4 | Closed until further notice |
| Gozo Museum of Archaeology | Closed since 13 April 2026 for redevelopment; the shop stays open and the Ċittadella combo ticket is unchanged |
| All Heritage Malta sites | Closed 1 January, Good Friday, 24, 25 and 31 December |
The aim is to get your bearings in a city small enough to walk end to end, and to keep the ticketed sights for Day 2. There is no transit to time today.
Drop bags, then walk in through City Gate and up Republic Street. Aim to reach Upper Barrakka Gardens around 11:30, a pacing target rather than a timetable.
The terrace looks across the Grand Harbour to Birgu and Fort St Angelo, with the Three Cities on the far shore. Study that skyline now, because on Day 5 you will be standing over there looking back.
Break for lunch on the streets around Republic Street, then reach the palace after 13:30. The State Rooms are the formal apartments and the Armoury is the other draw.
On the Wednesdays in the closure table above, the State Rooms stay shut until 13:30 and only the Armoury is open. If Day 1 lands on one of those dates, go after 13:30 or swap with Day 2.
Walk down to the bastions, taking the side streets as they drop toward the water. The grid makes it hard to get lost.
End at Lower Barrakka Gardens, whose terrace looks toward the harbour mouth, and eat on one of the grid streets nearby.
Build everything around the confirmed Hypogeum time. Tours are capped at 10 visitors, so this is the least flexible hour of the trip.
With a morning slot, leave the Valletta bus terminus about 90 minutes before your entry time. That is a pacing rule, not a timetable, and it covers the ride to Paola, the walk to the site and a late bus. Time the exact departure on the Malta Public Transport planner.
The Hypogeum is a Neolithic underground site in Paola, run by Heritage Malta. Follow the arrival instructions on the official Hypogeum page and in your confirmation email.
With an afternoon slot, swap the order: St John's first, the Hypogeum after lunch.
Be back in Valletta for lunch, then spend the afternoon at St John's Co-Cathedral. Leave at least an hour between the two tickets, so one late bus costs you neither.
The interior is best known for Caravaggio's Beheading of Saint John. The Co-Cathedral's site lists what each ticket includes. Remember the Sunday rule from the top of this guide.
Walk the bastions or sit over dinner near the grid streets. Go to bed early, because Day 3 is an early start.
Try the day-before outlets, then keep Day 2 in Valletta with the Co-Cathedral and Fort St Elmo. The WW1 display in Section 4 of the fort is closed until further notice, per the Heritage Malta opening-hours page, so expect a shorter visit.
If the Hypogeum eats the morning, drop Fort St Elmo first, since its WW1 display is closed. Next drop a second harbour viewpoint, because you saw the Grand Harbour from Upper Barrakka on Day 1.
This is the quiet inland day: a bus ride out, an early start and an unhurried return.
Malta Public Transport lists routes 50, 51, 52, 53 and 56 for Rabat and Mdina. The Explore Valletta local guide puts the ride at about 35-45 minutes, while a 2017 cathedral-museum page says about half an hour. Traffic decides which is closer.
Saqqajja Square in Rabat is the bus interchange. From there you walk uphill to Mdina's main gate.
Leave Valletta around 08:30. Early is the sensible bet for the quietest lanes, though that is a rule of thumb and not a guarantee. Mdina is a walled hilltop town of narrow lanes that open onto the square in front of St Paul's Cathedral.
Walk the lanes first, then the cathedral and its museum. The museum sets its own hours and fees on its own website.
Below the walls, Rabat has St Paul's Catacombs and the Domvs Romana, both run by Heritage Malta. Hours are on the opening-hours page, and last admission is 30 minutes before closing.
Have lunch around 13:00 in Rabat's centre, then walk down to Saqqajja Square.
Check the last departure in the Tallinja app before you agree to a late dinner in Mdina. The Malta Public Transport planner shows the same schedule.
This is one long day trip without a car, built around a ferry you cannot reserve.
The times below are pacing targets, not timetable entries. Replace each with the live departure from the planner.
| Block | Target | Source for the live time |
|---|---|---|
| Bus, Valletta to Ċirkewwa | Leave Valletta about 07:00 | Malta Public Transport planner, run the night before |
| Ferry, Ċirkewwa to Mġarr | About 25 minutes | Gozo Channel schedule and FAQ |
| Bus, Mġarr to Victoria | Be in Victoria by late morning | Planner shows the Gozo route number for your day |
| Ċittadella and lunch | Midday to early afternoon | Heritage Malta hours |
| Bus, Victoria to Xagħra, then Ġgantija | Mid-afternoon, only if the test below passes | Planner and Heritage Malta hours |
| Last sailing back from Mġarr | Decide this first | Gozo Channel schedule, valid to 3 Jan 2027 |
The feasibility test for Ġgantija works backwards. Start from the last sailing out of Mġarr, then subtract the Xagħra to Victoria and Victoria to Mġarr buses.
Keep Ġgantija only if that leaves at least one spare sailing before the last. If it does not, cut Ġgantija and keep the Ċittadella.
Boarding is first come, first served, with no reservation system, per Gozo Channel. On a busy morning, arrive early and expect a queue.
The crossing from Ċirkewwa to Mġarr takes about 25 minutes, per the same source. Gozo Channel's schedule is valid to 3 Jan 2027 and includes a winter night fare.
Passenger fares are on the Gozo Channel fares page. Read the current fare and where you pay at Mġarr there, because figures quoted elsewhere online are often out of date.
Take the bus from Mġarr to Victoria, the island's main town. The Ċittadella sits above it and is the day's anchor. Walk the ramparts for the view over the town and the island beyond.
The Gozo Museum of Archaeology closed on 13 April 2026 for redevelopment, per the Heritage Malta opening-hours page. Its shop stays open and the Ċittadella combo ticket is unchanged.
Ġgantija, the Neolithic temple complex in Xagħra, is the second stop and only if the test above passes. Finish early enough to catch your chosen sailing from Mġarr with a margin.
Catch the sailing you chose in the morning, then take the bus from Ċirkewwa back to Valletta. Look up the Sunday and holiday service before fixing this day to a Sunday.
Today you look back at Valletta across the Grand Harbour. It also works as your Sunday when St John's is shut.
You can go by bus or by water. Compare both on the Malta Public Transport planner, which shows the bus route number for your day. Pick the option with the shortest door-to-door time and check the last return the same morning. A target of crossing by 09:30 leaves the rest of the morning for Birgu.
Birgu is a working harbour town, with Fort St Angelo on its peninsula. Go in the morning, since last admission is 30 minutes before closing per the Heritage Malta opening-hours page.
After the fort, walk into the town for the Inquisitor's Palace, another Heritage Malta site. Hours for both are on the same page.
Have lunch on the Birgu waterfront. Then walk on to Senglea and the Gardjola Gardens viewpoint at its tip, which looks straight back at Valletta's bastions.
Marsaxlokk is an add-on if time allows. The village is known for the painted luzzu boats in its harbour. Read the bus route number and journey time from the Malta Public Transport planner before you build it into the day.
Say it is 14:00 and you are still in Birgu. Drop Marsaxlokk first. Go into Fort St Angelo only if you can pass the gate before last admission, and keep the waterfront lunch and Gardjola Gardens, which need no ticket.
Return to Valletta and walk the bastions from Upper Barrakka toward Lower Barrakka, the same stretch you started on Day 1.
Five days fits a first visit with one day trip and one fixed booking. It feels tight if you put Marsaxlokk and Birgu on the same day.
You have four days and want the Hypogeum. Drop Day 5 first. Do not cut Day 2, since the Hypogeum slot is the least movable item.
Your Sunday falls on Day 2, or a State Rooms Wednesday from the closure table lands on Day 1. Move Day 4 or Day 5 onto the Sunday and bring Day 2 to another date.
After any reshuffle, run the new order through the itinerary validator to catch clashes with closures.
You want slower time on Gozo, or Marsaxlokk as its own morning. Add the day after Gozo, because the ferry and bus legs take most of a day and a lighter one should follow. Other lengths are on Malta itineraries by trip length.
Heritage Malta sites close on 1 January, Good Friday, and 24, 25 and 31 December, per the opening-hours page. The Gozo Channel schedule is valid to 3 Jan 2027 and includes a winter night fare, so read the timetable before fixing Day 4.
If you want a different mix of days, the AI trip planner can rebuild this route around your dates.
Dates are in the closure table above.
Try the day-before outlets listed on the Heritage Malta Hypogeum page, then keep Day 2 in Valletta as described above.
