A five-day winter plan from one Ljubljana base: the festive market, Lake Bled and Postojna Cave as day trips, worked timing tables for Days 3 and 4, and advice on which day to cut, swap or extend.
Fortrip Editorial Team
By the Fortrip editors. This is a typical-winter plan. Market and fair dates change every season, so each date below is labelled with the season it belongs to and should be confirmed before you book.
This 5 day Slovenia itinerary fits first-time winter visitors who want a festive capital with its Christmas market, one alpine lake and one cave without changing hotels. It runs at a moderate pace: two Ljubljana days, two out-of-town days built around one main stop each, and a buffer day. Sleep in Ljubljana for the whole stay.
The trade-off is a night. You give up an evening beside Bled's lake, and Predjama Castle needs a taxi or a car. In return you unpack once and never race the early winter dusk with a bag on your back.
This Slovenia winter itinerary is an editor's route, not an official standard. For other lengths and regions, .
Yes, if you want a compact, festive trip: distances between Ljubljana, Bled and Postojna are short. The cost is short daylight, which is why each out-of-town day in this plan has one main stop.
Yes for Ljubljana, Bled and Postojna, which are reached by bus or train. Predjama Castle has no scheduled public service, so it needs a taxi from Postojna or a car.
Yes for the three stops planned here (Ljubljana, Lake Bled and Postojna Cave) from one Ljubljana hotel. The plan does not cover other parts of the country.
Fit “5 day slovenia itinerary” to your dates, pace, and hotels, then check every transfer before you book.
Plan it in FortripA 5 day Denmark itinerary on one Copenhagen base: Nyhavn and Strøget, Tivoli timed to the 16:30 Nimb show, Kronborg by train, and a Frederiksborg or Roskilde day.
A car-free 5 day Malta itinerary: Valletta on foot, the Hypogeum slot, Mdina by bus, Gozo by ferry and Birgu across the harbour, with closure dates and what to cut.
Ljubljana is the base for the whole stay. One bag, one hotel, no repacking in short winter daylight.
Daylight is the fixed constraint, so each out-of-town day is built around one main stop, not three. Look up the December sunset for your dates on timeanddate.com and set your return train or bus from it.
Days 1 to 3 also work on their own as a Ljubljana and Lake Bled itinerary for a long weekend.
| Day | Base | Key stops | Transit |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ljubljana | Triple Bridge, Central Market, Dragon Bridge, Prešeren Square at dusk, Breg | Airport to city, then on foot |
| 2 | Ljubljana | Ljubljana Castle courtyard fair, castle tower and chapel, Ljubljanica boat ride, Breg again | Funicular or on foot, then on foot |
| 3 | Ljubljana | Bled Castle, lakeshore walk, cream cake | Bus, about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 each way (unofficial listings; confirm) |
| 4 | Ljubljana | Postojna Cave, Predjama Castle | Train or bus, about 1 h; roughly 25 minutes on foot to the park (unofficial); taxi to Predjama |
| 5 | Ljubljana | Central Market colonnade, Cobblers' Bridge, Ljubljanica riverside, departure | Airport transfer |
Book ahead for Postojna Cave only. Tickets are tied to an exact date and time, so lock Day 4 before the other days.
Dates by season. The official Visit Ljubljana festive pages confirmed the 2025–26 season: lights on at Prešeren Square on 28 November 2025, and the Castle Festive Fair in the courtyard running to 6 January 2026. For 2026–27, the only dates found came from a third-party site, Ljubljana Info, which gives 27 November 2026 to 15 January 2027 for the wider festive period and notes that the market itself normally closes in early January. Treat those as provisional. Check the festive section of Visit Ljubljana for the current season before you book flights.
Ljubljana, Bled and Postojna all work without a car. Predjama Castle does not, as Day 4 explains.
Morning and afternoon. Travel in and check in. The airport's own page, Ljubljana Airport, lists the current bus and shuttle options into the city. Transfer times and fares are on that page, so check them there. If you arrive by rail or intercity bus, timetables are on Slovenske železnice and Arriva.
Once your bag is down, walk to Triple Bridge and the Central Market for a late lunch. The market sits on the river's edge, under the colonnade Jože Plečnik designed. Pick a stall that is cooking something hot and eat standing up; the point is to see what locals buy, not to sit down for a long meal. Weekday and Sunday hours differ and change by season. Confirm them on the Visit Ljubljana market listing before you plan around them.
From the market, cross the Dragon Bridge, a few minutes on foot, to see its four bronze dragons from the deck.
Evening. Start at Prešeren Square around dusk. In December the lights, switched on 28 November in the 2025 season per Visit Ljubljana, are the reason to arrive now rather than the next morning.
From there, walk toward Breg and the Ljubljanica River. The market stalls sit along the water and on nearby squares, so treat this as one loop rather than a stall checklist. Daily stall hours differ between sources, so check the current ones before you plan a late supper. Note two or three stalls you want to return to on Day 2.
Morning. Go up to Ljubljana Castle early, when the courtyard fair can be seen before it fills. In the 2025–26 season the Castle Festive Fair ran to 6 January 2026, per Visit Ljubljana. Winter opening hours, funicular times and ticket prices are listed on the Ljubljana Castle site. They change by season and no price is quoted here. The funicular saves the climb, but walking up in the cold is a fair alternative if you want to see the old town from above.
Once inside, give the courtyard fair your first half hour. Then look for the castle's viewing tower for the rooftops, and for the Chapel of St George. Which parts are open in winter is listed on the castle site.
Guided tours are an option. Winter tour times are on the same site.
Afternoon. Take a Ljubljanica boat ride. Visit Ljubljana lists river boat rides as part of the festive programme. The winter schedule and fares are on that page. Before or after, walk to Cobblers' Bridge, one of the river crossings between the market and Triple Bridge.
Evening. Go back to the stalls you noted on Day 1 and eat there. Then cross Triple Bridge on the way back to your hotel.
Morning. Take the bus. Unofficial timetable listings put the Ljubljana to Bled run at about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30, roughly hourly, with a stop near the lake. That is not an operator figure. Look up the exact departures and the last return for your date on Arriva or Nomago, and pick a bus that puts you at the lake well before midday.
The bus beats the train here. The train stops at Lesce-Bled, a separate station 4 to 5 km from the lake, so you add a second leg in short daylight. The rail timetable is on Slovenske železnice if you want to compare.
Midday. Build the day around the castle's window. Bled Castle is open daily from 8:00 to 18:00 from November to March, with last entry 30 minutes before closing. Ticket prices are on the same site, so check them there before you go. Go up first and take the view over the island while the light is good.
Afternoon. Come down to the lakeshore and walk the water's edge for the island church and the castle seen from below. Then sit down for a kremšnita, Bled's custard and cream cake, at one of the lakeside cafés. Prices vary by café, so read the menu board before you sit.
Can you cross to the island by boat? Winter pletna operation and fares are not confirmed. Ask at the Bled Castle site or the Bled tourist office, and plan the shoreline walk as the main event.
Evening. Return to Ljubljana. Staying in Bled adds a quiet evening and a morning without a bus deadline, but costs a night of the Ljubljana base. The cut, swap or extend section below covers that choice.
This worked example assumes a morning bus. The clock times are illustrative, not timetable data, so replace them with your real departures.
| Time | Step |
|---|---|
| About 8:30 | Bus out of Ljubljana; about 1 h 15 to 1 h 30 on unofficial listings |
| About 10:00 | Arrive at the lake and walk to the castle |
| About 10:15 to 12:00 | Bled Castle, open 8:00 to 18:00, last entry 30 minutes before closing |
| About 12:00 to 13:00 | Kremšnita and lunch at a lakeside café |
| About 13:00 to 15:00 | Lakeshore walk; the length depends on how far round you go |
| Last bus back | Take it from the Arriva or Nomago timetable for your date, and set your afternoon backward from it |
Set one rule before you leave Ljubljana: find the last bus back on Arriva and work backward from it. The last return time is not quoted here because it was not verified.
Morning. The cave's December advantage is that it holds a constant 10 °C whatever the weather outside. The Postojna Cave site lists it as open daily and the tour as about 1.5 hours. Dress in layers: it feels cold after a warm train.
Book online. Tickets are tied to an exact date and time and come with a change policy, and visitors must arrive 30 minutes before the tour, per the Postojna Cave site. Ticket prices and December tour times are on its live ticket timetable, so check them there before choosing a slot.
Postojna is about an hour from Ljubljana by train or bus. From the station to the park it is roughly a 25-minute walk, or a local bus. That walk comes from unofficial listings, so check it on a map for your own route. The train timetable is on Slovenske železnice, the bus on Arriva.
Afternoon. Predjama Castle is the stop that breaks the car-free rule. No scheduled public service reaches it, so plan on a car or a taxi from Postojna and back. Taxi cost and driving distance were not verified, so ask a local firm for a quote and a waiting time before you commit. Ask the taxi to wait or to confirm a return pickup before you leave the park. Predjama's winter hours and ticket prices are on the Postojna Cave site, which also covers the castle. The cave beneath it runs May to September only, so it is not part of this trip.
Evening. Be on the train or bus back before dark.
This worked example assumes a 10:30 cave slot. The clock times are illustrative, not timetable data, so shift them to your real slot and the real last return.
| Time | Step |
|---|---|
| About 8:30 | Train or bus out of Ljubljana, about 1 hour |
| About 9:30 to 10:00 | Walk to the park (about 25 minutes, unofficial); arrive 30 minutes before the tour |
| 10:30 to about 12:00 | Cave tour, about 1.5 hours |
| About 12:00 to 12:45 | Lunch near the park |
| About 12:45 | Taxi to Predjama; confirm the ride time and fare when you book it |
| About 13:15 to 14:30 | Castle visit; allow roughly an hour as an editorial estimate |
| After 14:30 | Taxi back and train or bus to Ljubljana |
The fixed point is the last departure. Take it from the timetables and the sunset from timeanddate.com, then count backward through the table. If the cave slot only exists late in the day, drop Predjama rather than the cave.
Treat the last day as a deliberate buffer for flights and a final market pass, not another excursion.
Morning. Cross Triple Bridge and spend an hour at the Central Market, under the Plečnik colonnade on the river. Buy something to carry home rather than eat on the spot. Weekday and Sunday opening hours are on the Visit Ljubljana market listing, so check which applies to your last morning. Then walk the Ljubljanica riverside once more, taking in Cobblers' Bridge on the way. If the festive market is still running, revisit the stalls. In the 2025–26 season the Castle Festive Fair ran to 6 January 2026, per Visit Ljubljana, and the market itself usually closes in early January.
Afternoon. If your flight is late, use the time for a longer castle visit or repeat whichever stop felt short on Days 2 to 4. Hours are on the Ljubljana Castle site. Vintgar Gorge is a possible add-on, but its winter status was not checked. Confirm it before counting on it.
Evening. Run a departure checklist:
Cut Day 5 if flights leave early or the market has already closed. It is the only slack day.
Cut Day 2's boat ride if you dislike cold, water-level time. The castle fair stands on its own.
Swap Day 4 for a second Ljubljana day if you have no car, no taxi budget or no confirmed cave tickets. The cave alone still works as a half-day by public transport, but Predjama does not.
Swap Days 3 and 4 if Postojna tickets are only available on one date. The order of the out-of-town days is flexible, but the city days are not.
Extend with a night in Bled if you want a calm lakeside evening or a first-light start at the castle. The cost is a broken single-base setup and a hotel change.
Extend with one more Ljubljana day if you want to repeat the market on a quiet weekday evening.
Is Slovenia worth visiting in winter? Yes, if you want a compact, festive trip: distances between Ljubljana, Bled and Postojna are short. The cost is short daylight, which is why each out-of-town day here has one main stop.
Can I do this without a car? Yes for Ljubljana, Bled and Postojna. Predjama Castle needs a taxi from Postojna.
Are 5 days in Slovenia enough for this route? Yes for the three stops planned here, from one hotel. The plan does not cover other parts of the country.
