AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Perched on the Pitztaler Glacier at roughly 2,900 metres, the Kapelle des Weißen Lichts—Chapel of the White Light—is less a conventional church than a walkable sculpture carved from gleaming Carrara marble. Completed in 1998 by the Milan-based Tyrolean artist Rudi Wach, its luminous white body stands in striking contrast against the glacier's surrounding red rock, turning a high-alpine world of ice and stone into an unexpected stage for art and reflection.↗↗
The chapel was conceived as a gesture of thanks after the glacier's development proceeded without serious accidents, and it remains one of the most memorable short detours on the mountain, just a few minutes' walk from the Gletscherexpress summit station. Coloured windows cast shifting light across a massive marble altar, and a gentle meditation path with stations circles the building, inviting visitors to pause and take in the panorama.↗↗
