AT A GLANCE
Why go?
The Socrates Hall is a striking semicircular neoclassical temple in the Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe, the UNESCO World Heritage landscape park above Kassel. Built between 1813 and 1816 to designs by Heinrich Christoph Jussow, it stands at the northwestern end of the great palace meadow, its graceful curved colonnade serving as a visual anchor in the English-style garden that Jussow masterfully wove around the park's older Baroque water features.↗↗↗
Named for the Greek philosopher whose ideas of dialogue and inquiry inspired the park's philosophical program, the Hall—also called the Halbmond (Half-Moon) for its distinctive crescent shape—is one of several classical garden structures that punctuate the walk through the Bergpark, inviting visitors to pause, reflect, and take in sweeping views across the lawn toward Schloss Wilhelmshöhe.↗↗
