AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Lac d'Obago (Aranese Estanh Obago) is a small, glass-clear tarn sitting at about 2,260 m inside the Circo de Colomèrs, the glacial bowl in the Val d'Aran that holds the densest cluster of high mountain lakes in the Pyrenees — around fifty estanhs strung together by crystal streams and ringed by 3,000-metre walls. There is no road to the water, no hut beside it, no sign that anybody has been here today. You earn it on foot, and that is exactly what makes it special.↗↗↗
For most walkers Obago is one of the lake-stations on the classic Colomèrs circuit, a long day out from the Banhs de Tredòs valley or a night from the Colomèrs refuge, with the GR-11 trans-Pyrenean trail running past its far shore before climbing steeply to the Port de Ratera pass — the frontier between the Aran and the Aigüestortes National Park. The peaks of Tuc de Ratera and Tuc de Sendrosa stand over the water, and beyond them the wall of the Gran Tuc de Colomèrs closes the cirque.↗↗↗
