Pico de la Entecada

A green sentinel above the Val d'Aran

The Entecada is a textbook mountain of this corner of the central Pyrenees. Its flanks, however steep, stay clothed in woodland and rolling grass until near the summit, with only occasional, modest rock outcrops breaking through — the underlying rock here is a dark, flaky slate (llicorella in Catalan). Centuries of herding have criss-crossed the slopes with well-worn paths, so the approach is rarely a matter of scrambling; it is more often a question of picking your line across open pasture and following the crest.↗↗

Positioned at the head of the Artiga de Lin valley, just south of the Portillón crossing and where that valley meets the Garonne, the peak marks the western limit of the Val d'Aran and projects northward off the main Pyrenean divide. That border setting gives the walk its special flavor: you stand on one of those frontier summits that belong to Spain on the map yet gaze down into French Luchonnais pasture, with numbered boundary markers tracing the ridge nearby.↗↗↗

Three ways up

The most popular approach from the Aran side begins at the hermitage of the Mare de Diu dera Artiga de Lin, a parking spot about five and a half kilometres south of Es Bòrdes. From there a signposted track climbs through forest and open barrancos to the Còth dera Monjòia col, then edges along the cordal past the pointed summit of Malh Roi and down through the grass to the Còth de Poilanèr, before the last pull to the top. The round trip is long — around seven hours including stops, some sixteen kilometres and well over a thousand metres of climbing — but the terrain stays comfortable and there is no real technical difficulty beyond a steep, pathless grassy descent if you take the Malh Roi variant.↗

A second Aran-side option, and the classic FEEC '100 cims' outing, is a long ridge loop starting from the Còth de Baretja area below the Coll de Portillón, reached by a dirt track branching off the Bossòst-to-Luchon road. This route strings together a chain of gentle green summits — Tuc d'Arres, Montagut, Campsaure, Poilanèr and Ròca dera Entecada — running the border crest with steady ups and downs, passing small mountain lakes, and returning over the same ridge. Hikers praise it as spectacular if somewhat long and strenuous, with some unmarked sections that can be confused with livestock trails.↗↗

You can also climb from the French side at the Hospice de France above Bagnères-de-Luchon. Here the way is short and straightforward enough for fit families: about ten kilometres and five hours, climbing a progressive 870 to 900 metres up green slopes past the Fontaine Rouge spring and the open pastoral cabins at Roumingau and Arro, until a last bend of the crest delivers you to the summit. The route crosses the frontier along the way, so the Entecada is reached from Spain even though the walk begins in France.↗↗

What the summit gives you

The payoff is the view. Turn north and the high wall of the Pyrenees opens out: the long spine of the Maladeta massif with the Aneto, the bare grey tooth of the Forcanada, and the peaks of the Perdiguero group — Maupas, Lézat and Quayrat — rising beyond the divide. Turn the other way and you survey the whole sweep of the Artiga de Lin valley down to the Garonne, the silhouettes of the Besiberri and Aigüestortes mountains to the south, and the rounded green cordals of the Aran, with landmarks like the Montardo and the Maubèrme picking themselves out in the distance. Reviewers consistently single out this unbroken 360° panorama as the reason the climb is worth the effort.↗↗↗↗

The walk itself is part of the appeal. In summer the ridge is alive with free-roaming cattle and horses grazing the meadows, shepherds' cabins dot the hillsides, and small still lakes — the estanh de Cap deth Plan, the dera Èrba and others — mirror the surrounding peaks. It is a softer, Atlantic-flavoured side of the high Pyrenees: wide green undulations, wildflowers and a constant play of light across the slopes, very different from the grey limestone of the central massif.↗↗↗

Planning your visit

Timing and logistics matter as much as fitness here. The French-side road from Luchon up to the Hospice de France typically closes through the winter — around 30 November to 15 April — and the trail can be snow-covered and hazardous after fresh falls, so the reliable window is late spring through autumn. The summit is reached on foot from all directions; there is no road or cable car partway up.↗↗

From the Aran side, note that the rough access track toward the Còth de Baretja is only passable to high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles for its upper stretches, and walkers have reported that driving right up to the coll can now attract fines — parking is safest at the lower designated area. Whichever trailhead you choose, expect a full day: good shoes, water, layers for the exposed summit and a sense for reading unmarked pasture are the difference between a pleasant walk and a confusing one. The climb is well within reach for anyone of average fitness who takes it steadily, which is exactly why it is such a favourite on the 100 cims circuit.↗↗↗

There is plenty of local base for a longer stay: the Val d'Aran town of Es Bòrdes sits at the foot of the valley, and the surrounding hills hold a scattering of huts and campsites — from the staffed refuge at Artiga de Lin to the historic Hospice de France on the French side — making the Entecada a comfortable centerpiece for a few days of Pyrenean hiking around the Portillón and Luchon corridor.↗↗
