AT A GLANCE
Why go?
Pura Taman Tanjung is a small but historically significant Hindu temple in the hillside village of Budakeling, Karangasem Regency, eastern Bali. It marks the spot where the legendary priest Danghyang Astapaka established his hermitage in the late 15th century after planting a tanjung-wood staff that grew into a living tree — still standing today.↗↗
One of the oldest spiritual sites in eastern Bali, the temple is maintained by the descendants of Danghyang Astapaka, a priestly lineage known as Brahmana Buddha. Its story is inseparable from the founding of Budakeling village itself, and its rare 30-year ceremony draws the entire clan together in a powerful display of living tradition.↗↗

The Legend of the Living Staff
According to Balinese oral tradition and temple histories, Danghyang Astapaka — son of the great Javanese sage Danghyang Angsoka and nephew of the revered Danghyang Nirartha — arrived in Bali at the invitation of King Dalem Waturenggong, the powerful ruler of the Gelgel kingdom. His mission was to perform the sacred Yadnya Homa (Agnihotra) fire ceremony for the welfare of the realm. After completing the ritual, a falling-out with the king's ambitious minister, I Gusti Arya Batanjeruk, drove the priest to leave the palace and head eastward into the unknown interior of Bali.
